Monthly Update for parents and carers
Building Futures Together
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thanks for your positive feedback on the last edition of Balfron Highlights. I hope that this edition will provide a snap shot of the wide range of pupil activities and successes. I have also included details of the survey responses that will inform our improvements this year and some for next session.
I has been great to re-start the HT drop-ins. The next drop-in is on 30 April. If you would like to pop in to chat with me without an appointment, you are welcome to come in between 330pm and 5pm.
We have a supportive and active parent council and are always looking to include more parents and carers. I have included the presentations that Mr Braid and I shared at the last meeting. It was helpful to be able to link with the parent council to discuss our rationale for decisions and to further discuss improvements. The next parent council meeting is on Tuesday 6th May at 6.30pm. It would be great to see more parents come along.
This is an intense period for our senior pupils as we approach the SQA exam diet. We have had a significant focus on study skills to help prepare our learners. Our focus for studying is on the the Balfron Core Four - we encourage strategies to:
understand
retrieve
practise
get feedback
Thanks to Mrs Skinner, I have included a range of resources below that will help you support your child with organisation and study at home at this stressful and intense time..
Thank you for your support and partnership.
Feedback is always welcome. I am pleased to receive that directly
Elaine Bannatyne

Parents first point of contact is your child's Form Class Leader. If you have a general query or are looking for information about your child, please contact the form class leader in the first instance.
Small things make a big difference :
Send your child in full school uniform - set the tone for a positive day, part of the Balfron Family
Chromebooks charged and ready for use at school
Maximise their attendance and punctuality - only stay off if absolutely necessary
Talk about what your child is learning with them. Help build resilience - learning should be hard!
Chromebook Safety Reminder & Update
Linked to questions relating to our mobile phone policy, I was recently asked about Chromebook safety. I liaised with technicians and colleagues in school and at Stirling Council.
Chrome devices do not have any form of filtering on them when they leave the school premise. This has been a long standing issue for us. It has always been stated that it is the parents’ responsibility to monitor their child’s activity when using technology at home. However, in practice we all know this is challenging.
I am pleased to share that Stirling Council has been provided budget to put a device based cloud filtering solution onto the Chromebooks this year. That means that whether inside or outside school premises, the same filtering applies to the Chrome devices and will essentially make the Smoothwall unnecessary as the filtering will be done by the cloud service. After April, Stirling Council will begin the procurement process to purchase this for the Chrome estate.
Ideally, what we would like to do going forward is to incorporate all student devices into this platform so students get the same filtering whether on a PC, laptop, Chromebook, in school or outside of school. This will then allow us to eliminate the Smoothwalls altogether and provide a seamless filtering experience for all of Stirling Council’s students.
We will keep you updated on this matter.
The Head Prefects planned and delivered an assembly for Mobile March. The slides are on the left.
Key messages were around :
recognising the benefits that mobile phones bring
highlighting the issues that overuse can cause
benefits of reducing screen time
challenging everyone to be more aware and reduce their personal screen time
We value the views of parents and carers and regularly survey on specific and general topics that we are keen to improve.
Since our communication survey, we have de-activated our Twitter/X account. We have ordered The School App and after staff have been trained, we will be delighted to use this as an alternative, safe platform for information and success sharing. I hope to have more details in the summer term.
Our updated mobile phone policy review was conducted recently. The summary of all responses (parents, teachers and pupils) and our action can be found below.
Every couple of years I ask for parental views on school improvement. Using the survey that HMIe share during inspections, we find it incredibly helpful to identify the areas that parents, teachers and staff feel are working well and those that need improvement. I appreciate that we can all feel survey fatigue, so I am grateful for the insight that your responses bring. The feedback will inform our improvement planning focus for 2025-26.

Increased evidence of Snus Use at Balfron - what can we do?
Our Bellrock colleagues have reported to me that they have noted an increase in small white bags in bins and on the ground around the campus. This indicates that some of our young people are using snus. Snus are nicotine pouches that users put in their mouths under the top lip. Some footballers are known to use snus as a performance enhancer. There are very high quantities of nicotine in the pouch and this can cause younger pupils to feel very ill. Given the high quantities of nicotine, snus is highly addictive.
I have included a fact sheet on Snus below that might help. To help educate our pupils, PC Barclay has recently spoken to all pupils at assemblies about this and other important topics during a safety assembly. There is a range of Channel 4 documentaries that might be helpful to watch with your child Eg Snus - Hooked on Nicotine.
In addition to providing education, we regularly check the toilets and have vape detectors installed in some. Please join us in discouraging and addressing use of snus and vapes.

We are running an Easter School Programme over the holidays. You and your child may have already received an email inviting them along if their teacher has highlighted them. There may also still be space for others. Your child must confirm attendance with their teacher in advance as space is limited.
We have bought access to Study Habits & Techniques WalkThrus.

Thanks to Jackie from the Parent Council collaborating with Mrs Youens and our Eco club, we are delighted to offer our uniform pop up shop at school in our reception at lunchtimes on Wednesdays as follows:
Wednesday 23 April
Wednesday 30 April
Wednesday 7 May
The pupils are keen to help spread the word about the stall and increase the recycling of uniform as well as their plans to help with the recycling of non-uniform clothing. We really hope that this will support our community and reinforce our commitment to learning for sustainability. Together we can save the planet!
