Indirect Service

Most of the services that therapists provide fall within the definition of indirect services. These services include:

  • Direct contact with the student to monitor and observe functional status within the least restrictive environment
  • Modify and adapt curriculum, materials, environment, or equipment
  • Cooperative planning and consultation with IEP team
  • Demonstration teaching with staff that work with the student daily
  • Ongoing progress reviews
  • Provide additional supports, such as: pencil grips, adapted paper, fidgets, and other sensory and/or fine motor supports

It is incorrect to assume that indirect services are less important or less valuable than direct services. It is also incorrect to assume that indirect service will involve less time or effort on the therapist’s part. (MN Department of Children, Families & Learning, 2002, p. 63).
