Service Models

As education-based occupational and physical therapists we have a strong belief that children learn best when skills are practiced frequently in their natural environments. Therefore, we believe in training staff involved with the student in how to incorporate our strategies so that students needs are addressed daily throughout the school day and within their home setting. “The focus of the disablement model is not on ‘fixing’ the child but adapting the tasks, expectations, and environment, and facilitating successful performance of the child’s activities in their multiple roles” (Minnesota Department of Children, Families, and Learning, 2002).

These beliefs are based on research in the areas the disablement model, motor control, human occupation, and evidence based practice. Refer to the MN OT/PT state practitioner manual for further information on Minnesota guidelines for therapists in the educational system. Refer to the Stillwater Area Public Schools reference guide for more information on service models within our district.
