6th Grade Happenings

Check out this week's news!

Parents and Students-- 05/20/2022

THANK YOU for such a great school year.  There has been so much growth in ALL areas.

Please take a look at the pictures--I made a whole new page just for this week.  And know--all these pictures I have posted throughout the year will stay on my class website for any future use.  You are more than welcome to download, print, edit, etc....I take these for you all to enjoy so you can see what your child is up to with us here at school.

Have a GREAT summer!!  Don't forget to keep reading and writing--you could do some math, too :)

This year has been a blessing.

Thank you!

-Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 05/13/2022

Please check out what's happening next week with Zoo info as well--it will be another VERY BUSY week with so much fun packed in.

Here are some pictures from this week--we got to celebrate the end of the year with our Faith Families and with our Reading Buddies.

Have a great weekend--it's getting kind of bittersweet around here.  I know all are ready for the summer break, but our kiddos had an extra hard time seeing those 8th graders leave today...there are a lot of good relationships between these students.  As an FYI--7th grade hosts the graduation reception for 8th grade.  If you are around tonight, be sure to stop on in the gym and see what you may encounter next year :)

Happy Saturday!

What a great week we had at SGB!!  Take a look at some of the pictures from the fun here.  Thank you so much for the sweet Teacher Appreciation notes, cards, and gifts--the love and kindness that comes from SGB is just priceless.

We have a very busy two weeks left--please take a look at what 6th grade has coming up--let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

It is going to be a HOT week--please be sure your child has sunscreen at school---a hat and sunglasses may be very helpful as well.

I LOVED seeing so many of our students last night when I dropped my kids off at the Parent Date Night fundraiser for Camp Savio.  This sixth grade group of students are great role models each and every day.  They truly do the right thing and treat people right at school.  My own children just adore them all, as do I!

Have a great weekend!!

Mrs. Nielson

04/29/2022

We had another great week in 6th grade---here are some pictures from the week, including a picture of our newest Falcon--Carlee Rae with her big brother Cole.

Please look into what we have going on next week--another very busy week...please note, there is XSTREAM on Monday from 3-4:30.

Enjoy the weekend--today was just beautiful.

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 04/22/2022

Please take a look at the calendar and see what is coming up in 6th grade next week and beyond--there is a lot going on these last few weeks of school.  Remember to let me know if your child intends to leave with their grandparents next Friday.  Please help us tell grandparents that the students will be sitting with them--they'll meet up together in the church at 9:45.

Have a GREAT weekend!

-Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 04/14/2022

I just really wanted to send a note to say THANK YOU!  Your children are amazing--they did so many beautiful things things this week--they rocked the IOWA tests, the reenactment of the Stations (it was streamed and can be viewed on the SGB Facebook page), Night at the Museum, today's service project and so many more things around the school.  And thank you to all of you for all of your help to allow the students to shine in all these areas--and also to those who helped clean up the Kool Kats from the floors last night.

Here are some pictures from the week and a peek into next week.

I do want you to know that students will be sitting with their grandparents at the Grandparents Mass on April 29.  If their guests are unable to attend Mass, please let me know.  Also let me know if your child intends to leave school that day early with their grandparents.

FYI--I forgot to send home a permission slip for a disc-golfing field trip for PE, which will be from 12-1:30 on Wednesday, April 27.  Mrs. Brayman is looking for some drivers to take them to and from Northwest.  The slip will come home next week and you can let her know then.

Have a very blessed Easter and enjoy the extra time with your children.  I am so grateful for your children and all of you.

-Mrs. Nielson

04/01/2022

Good afternoon!  We had another great week.  The students' National Parks projects are coming along nicely.  We are trying to focus on detailed facts and organization of the information.  We look forward to sharing these with you at the Night at the Museum.

Please take a good look at the schedule ahead for next week...we have a lot going on with testing.  We try to spread the tests out so they aren't in that mode all day long.

Here are some pictures from the week--we had such a great time at School of Economics on Monday.  Our students did such a great job representing St. Gregory's.

Have a great weekend!

Be sure to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

-Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon-- 03/18/2022

We had another great week in 6th grade!

One of the most enjoyable parts of their week was learning more about National Parks.  Today they each selected the National Park they want to study further--we'll really dive into the research piece next week. If you have any books about National Parks at home, or if you make it to the Maryville Public Library, they are more than welcome to bring those resources in.  I uploaded the list to their Google Classroom if they can't quite remember which park they chose.  This project will be on display at the Night at the Museum on April 13.

Here is what we have coming up next week--I also updated a few pictures as we enjoyed going into Preschool today to share a project that was started with First Grade way before Christmas Break.

Have a great weekend!  Thank you for all you do.

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon!  What a week!  Hopefully we can get ourselves into more of a routine come next Tuesday. 03/11/2022

Here is a peek at what we have going on next week, and throughout the remaining days of March.  It's all going to fly on by.  There are a few pictures, especially from our first School of Economics meetings--our 6th graders really showed some great leadership skills in their first meeting!

Enjoy the weekend--see you all next week!

Happy Friday! 03/04/2022

The weather this week was just beautiful---Spring Fever may be creeping in, but the students really did a great job enjoying the weather while still taking care of their responsibilities.

Please check to see what we have going on next week--it's a short week, but busy as ever as it is the end of the THIRD QUARTER!  Wow!

I just snapped a couple of pictures today while the students had their movie party with the Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963.  It is such a meaningful unit for the students as we continue to remember to be kind and embrace one another's differences.

Have a wonderful weekend!  If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 02/25/2022

We had another great, but super short, week!

Our sixth graders stepped up and served this week--their hearts were behind the "More for the Moore Family" campaign, and wow, did their service pay off!  Our school raised more than $850 for the Moore family!  Thank you to all who contributed!

I have updated next week's plans (it will be a pretty busy week!!) and included pictures from the week--including our celebration of "National Tortilla Chip Day"!

Have a great weekend!!  As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.

-Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 02/18/2022

I just wanted to send a quick note to let you know that the 6th graders did not make it home with their NCAA March Madness tickets--Mrs. Dropinski has them and will get them to the students on Tuesday.

Please check out the links (Next Week's Happenings) to see what we have coming up--we also have some great pictures (This Week's Pictures) from this past week.  I especially want to thank Jenni Jordan, Julie and Curt Tobin, along with any others who worked behind the scenes to put together such a fun Valentine's Party--the kids had a blast playing GaGa Ball and eating ice cream.

Also, thank you to you all for attending Parent-Teacher Conferences this week.  I truly mean it when I say I am blessed to teach your children.  They work so hard in the classroom, and they really have hearts of gold.  Thank you for all you do to support them and to support our school.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Friday!                                                                                       02/11/2022

We had another great week together!  The students worked especially hard through a mini Civil Rights unit in Reading class as we continue to read Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963.  We also learned about St. Scholastica and St. Benedict yesterday as Father celebrated the Feast of St. Scholastica at Mass.  We wrapped up our Ten Commandments Unit today and will begin learning more about the early kings and how David came to reign.  Your child is an author and working on his/her illustrations as they all wrote a children's story that depicted one of the Ten Commandments.  These books will be due next Thursday, and then we'll start sharing them with our younger students.  The books are looking great!

Students are encouraged to bring in Valentine's on Monday--we have 14 students in our class.  They can bring a box or a plastic sack in on Monday to collect their Valentine's in.  They also are encouraged to bring a favorite board game to play for a portion of our Valentine's Day party.

Here is what we have coming up next week and then a few pictures from this week.  Our Upcoming Week

Have a great weekend!

Good afternoon!

What a great week!  Congratulations to Cole and Avah for representing our class in the Spelling Bee--Cole went advanced on as our school Spelling Bee winner!!

Please check out the pictures from the last couple of days.

Also, be sure to check out what is coming up next week....I also put a couple of save-the-date notes at the bottom of the calendar as we have a couple field trips this spring that we would love to have parents join in on.

Have a great weekend!  I think you may have some tired kiddos this evening.

Mrs. Nielson

Happy Friday!  01/28/2022

We had another GREAT week!!  Today we started a book called The Watsons Go To Birmingham-1963.  It is a great historical fiction read for us, and it will give some insight into the Civil Rights Movement.  Again, this is one of the first times the students have learned about this pivotal time in history so you may get more questions from your child at home.  It's really a great book!

Please be sure to take a look at the upcoming week--so many exciting things going on with Catholic Schools Week.

I will be sure to take lots of pictures next week as I didn't have any to add to the album this week.

Have a great weekend--I hope to all who are able to celebrate Mass with us at 10:30 on Sunday!

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 01/21/2022

We had a GREAT (and healthy!) week in 6th grade!!  We started learning more about why God gave the Israelites the Ten Commandments, we did a lot of work with our vocabulary words from our Reading unit, learned more about adjectives, and many kids had time to play a new game today-Shut the Box!

Please take a look at what we have going on next week and take a peek at some of our pictures from the COLD week.

Please note that next Sunday (January 30) we will have an all school Mass to kick-off Catholic Schools Week.  There will be a pancake breakfast in the Parish Hall after the Masses that morning.  We encourage our students to attend the 10:30 Mass--they'll sit with their Falcon Faith Families.  The students will be doing the Mass roles as well.  To ensure we have our roles covered, we need to know if anyone will be absent from that Mass.  Please reply and let me know if your child will NOT be attending Mass on Sunday, January 30 at 10:30.

Please continue to send in coats, hats, and gloves!  The snow gear can get sent too as it doesn't look like that snow is going to melt away quite yet.

Have a great week!!

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 01/14/2022

We had a great day---it started with recognizing all of our students and their great achievements, and then ended with a birthday celebration for Avah!  I think the students were excited for the long weekend!

We focused on Moses and how he freed the Israelites from slavery in Religion--Father came in and helped us connect the Sacrifice of the Lamb in the Old Testament to the Sacrifice of Christ.  The students really enjoyed having him in the classroom!

We also wrote argumentative essays about having homework over breaks...believe it or not, some students agree that homework isn't always that terrible of a thing!  We'll proofread and edit them on Tuesday and then move onto an adjective unit.

Please be sure to check out the Updated Pictures  and what we have going on in the  Upcoming Week.

Please continue to send coats, hats, and gloves with the students every day!  If it really does snow this weekend, the snow gear can make it's way back next week as well.

Enjoy the weekend!!

-Mrs. Nielson

01/07/2022

Good afternoon!  We had such a great week--it was so fun having the students do the Secret Santa activities--thank you for providing for them all this week.  I hope noone came home with stomach aches after all the junk food they enjoyed :)

Please review what we have coming up this week and enjoy our pictures from the week.  The students can bring their snow gear again next week---it may be melted later in the week, but they can play in it early in the week if they have their snow pants, boots, coats, etc...

Today marked the end of the 2nd quarter--grade cards will be mailed home early next week.  We will be recognizing our students' achievements at the 2nd Quarter Success Showcase at 8am next Friday, January 14, in the gym.  Please join if you are able.

Good afternoon!  01/03/2022

It's hard to believe we are already to January 3rd--as we have settled into our own little routines of life at home, it's kind of exciting to get back into the routine of school life.

Please check out what we have happening this week--hopefully it will feel like we are all easing back into everything....  Secret Santa will be Wednesday through Friday.

This week's happenings

It is snowy and cold, but we will still plan on going outside for recess.  Please be sure to dress accordingly and bring your boots and snow pants, especially if you want to go into the snow!  We for sure need to have students bringing hats, gloves, and coats!  Fresh air does a lot of good for us all.

See you all tomorrow!

Mrs. Nielson

Good evening 6th graders and parents, 12/13/2021

I am saddened to have found ourselves in this situation, but it is where we are at.  It was going to be a week of review/tests and then a whole lot of fun.  With that being said, the students will still be doing some reviewing and getting their tests taken care of in Religion, Reading, and ELA, but we'll pick up with reviewing and testing in Math when they come back in January.  I also know that they had hit somewhat of a good stopping point in both Science and Social Studies.

I have typed up a plan for the week and have attached below.  I broke it down by days to align with what we're going to be doing, but it doesn't have to be completed in that exact way...

6th Grade's Plan for Dec. 13 - 17

The plan is to have families stop by the school tomorrow between 3-5:30 to pick up materials in the gym---as a middle school, we'd prefer for the kids to come through into their classrooms and grab their materials from their lockers and bins.  I will be in here and will help guide them as to what they quickly need to grab.  If you can't come at that designated time, just let me know and I can arrange to get you what you need.  I also have it all laid out in the room if you can get in earlier.

We will do Secret Santa when we return from break.  We'll plan to combine days 1 and 2....so we will do Secret Santa Wednesday-Friday of the week we come back.

If your child will need to check out a Chromebook, let us know.  There won't be a lot of Zooming, it will mainly be getting work done on your time....there are a couple of things that will be posted within Google Classroom which will need to be accessed.

I will be in touch throughout the week!  Thank you for being flexible!

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 12/10/2021

Christmas is sure coming--there has just been so much excitement and fun around here as we are all preparing for the birth of Christ.  There has also been a time of reflection regarding the true meaning of the season.  Today the students prepared their hearts by going to reconciliation with Father Albert.  I am always so proud of their reverence while in the church.

The students have really been enjoying reading Number the Stars.  There has been such great discussions of World War II and the Holocaust.  We will watch a movie called Miracle at Midnight towards the end of next week, which has a very similar storyline as Number the Stars does.

Here are next week's happenings--there is a lot going on--please read through it and let me know if you have any questions....we have a super fun Christmas XSTREAM planned for Monday after school so we sure hope all are able to join and stay with us from 3-4:30.

I have added a few pictures from the week here.

Have a wonderful weekend!!  May you all continue to have a blessed Advent as we prepare the way for Christ.

-Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! Friday, December 3

We had another great week in sixth grade!  The students have been continuing to work hard in all areas--they especially have enjoyed decorating our classroom and our door.  It is beginning to feel like Christmas around here for sure!

I have updated the schedule for next week here.

I was trying to post some pictures, but realized that my photos are not compatible and won't upload--so, I will change the settings on my phone and add new pictures next week!

Have a great weekend!  Thank you for contributing to so many of our happenings, whether it was the PJs for our class PJ drive, or if you let your child bring in Christmas decor for our room, I greatly appreciate it all.  And I greatly appreciate all of you and your children.

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 11/19/2021

What another great week we had!  And of course, it flew by!

The students worked hard this week--they finished up their verbs today, started another writing unit regarding their blessings in life and how God is at the center of those blessings, and continued working away with circles, angles, and fractions in math class.  They are all doing so well!

We are finishing up Maniac Magee.  We are going to watch the movie that goes with it on Monday, November 30, when they return from Thanksgiving Break.  They can wear their pajamas and bring snacks if they choose.  For our class Advent project we are going to focus on those who are with very little, such as Maniac was in our book.  I am going to ask the students to bring in a pair of new or slightly used pajama sets for any sized child.   We are going to donate these to the North Star Advocacy Center as they are able to get them to children here in Marvyille who are in need.  If they could bring these in here when they come back those first couple of days after Thanksgiving Break, that'd be great!

Please check out what we have coming up here.

Have a great weekend!  For those who will be at the NW game, I will be at trash pick-up, along with Mrs. Ackley tomorrow afternoon--we will meet in the northwest corner of the stadium.

Go Spoofhounds!  Go Bearcats!  Go Falcons!  It's a busy weekend for all!

Thank you again for all you do!  Enjoy the weekend!

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 11/12/2021

Another week has just flown by.  Your children did so well this week, especially with me being absent both Monday and Tuesday.  They have just really settled into the routine and continue to rise to meet the expectations that are set.

This week the students finished their Religion unit about God's Faithfulness and many of the early people in the Bible.  They continued working with verbs and will be assessed next week.  In Reading class, they explored Greek democracy and how it affects us today.  We took some time to learn more about Veterans Day and the importance of honoring our Veterans.  Next week they'll learn more about the Roman Republic.  Both their Reading and Religion topics are previews to topics they'll further explore in Social Studies throughout the school year.

Be sure to check out what's coming up next week and enjoy looking at a few pictures from the week.

Good afternoon! 11/05/2021

We had another great week in 6th grade!  The students had wrapped up many units last week, so this week was an introduction week in many areas, including a new round of vocabulary in Reading, a start to the verbs unit in ELA, and a start to our focus on God's Faithfulness in Religion.

I have attached next week's plans and schedule here---please note our class has Thursday's Mass roles--please join us if you are able!    Our Week Ahead

I added a couple of Peace Poster pictures here:  Class Pictures

Thank you for all you do to support our school--today's journal asked the students to elaborate on what they are thankful for, and so many of them talked about their families and our school.  I am also so thankful for our school and for all of you who support us.

Hope to see you tomorrow night at the PTO Dinner Auction!

Mrs. Nielson

Happy Friday! 10/29/2021

We had a GREAT time celebrating Red Ribbon week and Halloween--there were a lot of prayers for self-control as the excitement built, but we all made it and the kids had an absolute blast!

Please take a break from cooking this weekend and head to Pizza Ranch either Saturday or Sunday---if you dine in and mention SGB, part of the proceeds will be given back to our school!

If you are planning to help pick up trash this weekend, I will be the teacher that will be meeting up with everyone.  Please note this week's game is at 2:00 so it will be closer to 5:00 or so when we meet.    Sign-Up for Trash Pick Up

Please check out what we have going on this upcoming week....Our Week Ahead

Thank you again for all coming in for conferences--It was a joy to talk to each of you about your child--they are doing such great things each and every day!

Have a great weekend!  Go Bearcats and Happy Halloween!

Mrs. NIelson

Good afternoon! 10/20/2021

I am a couple of days early on my weekly note, but I just wanted to update you on some information as you will probably hearing it from your children as well.

Red Wheel catalogs and order forms came home yesterday.  This is similar situation to the trash pick-up....it's a fundraiser for the 7th/8th grades class trip they go on each year, but we would like for 6th grade to start working to bank up some funds as well.  The goal is to have all students sell 20 items---just try your best on this....we especially have a lot of sibling pairs between 6th and 8th grades that may make it a bit tougher to get 40 total items between the two kids.  With holidays coming up, it may be a great time for people to want to buy.

Order forms MUST be turned into Mrs. Gastler on November 18.  The money is due by November 24, the day of delivery, but Mrs. Gastler doesn't want to have the money until it has ALL been collected from the individual students.  Also--checks only, no cash.  Checks need to be made out to St. Gregory School.

Another bit of good news---the Maryville Pride Lions Club will not be coming in until Monday to pick up the Peace Posters!  The students were quite grateful to hear this news.  They gained a couple of more days to complete this project.

If you have not had a chance to sign up for conferences, here is the link Mrs. Quinlin sent out.

K-8 Conference Sign Up  I look forward to chatting with you all!  The students did see their grade cards this afternoon.  We will be celebrating their academic successes on Friday at 7:50 in the gym if you are able to join.

Next week is Red Ribbon Week-so there will be a few dress-up days throughout the week.  More information will be coming home on that in the next few days.

Again--thank you for all you do at home to support your child.  These students are doing such a great job and it is really a joy to be with them every day.

Have a great afternoon!

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 10/15/2021

The students worked hard putting a wrap on the first quarter!  We will have a short First Quarter Recognition event on Friday in the gym beginning at 7:50.  Parents are more than welcome to join us!

As a background on these recognition events, we do one at the end the first, second, and third quarters to provide some more immediate recognition and to alleviate some of the time we would use at the end of the school year assembly.  We recognize Student Ambassador and Assistants, we'll honor those students who participated in the fall sports, students from each grade who has shown good sportsmanship in and outside of PE, and then we announce those on the A Honor Roll.

We also have our first XTSREAM on Tuesday from 3-4:30.  Please plan to pick your student up by the gym doors.

The Peace Posters are due no later than Friday as they'll be getting picked up by the Maryville Pride Lions Club right away Friday morning.

I have updated the following on the class website as well.

This Week's Happenings

First Quarter Pictures

I look forward to visiting with you all at conferences--the sign-up will be coming from Mrs. Quinlin soon.  Please feel free to contact me if you need to meet at a different time or if you have any concerns before that week.  Thank you for all you do and for all of your support!

Have a great weekend!

It's been another great week here in 6th grade.  We wrapped up our Towers Falling unit, which was a great source for many of the students while they wrote their How to Be a Good American essays.  They are all currently reading their own books as we plan to start Maniac Magee towards the end of next week.  This book is about a child who becomes homeless after a tragedy within his family.  It focuses on the experiences he goes through and how his perspectives change.  It is generally a book enjoyed by all students.

Our class has the Mass roles for next week's Mass--please join us at Thursday's 8am Mass if you are able!

This upcoming week will be our last week of the first quarter.  I look forward to conferencing with you all the last week of October--Mrs. Quinlin will be sending out the conference sign-up in the next couple of weeks.  However, if you have any questions between now and then, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Finally--the students are coming home today with information about XSTREAM, which is an afterschool program we have once a month (from 3-4:30) for our 6th-8th grade students.  The kids have recess, eat snacks, and participate in some fun activities that aren't always possible to do in the school day.  We ask for a $10 donation to help us with the snacks and some supplies.  Please check out the form that is coming home and let me know if you have any questions.

It's a blessing to be here with your children.  Enjoy your weekend!

Mrs. Nielson

Good afternoon! 09/30/2021

We have had another great week!  The students have been presented with a couple of great opportunities to participate in--the Maryville Pride Lions Club have invited us to participate in a Peace Poster Contest with the theme "We are all connected".  Most of them have shown me a rough idea of what they will do with this theme for their poster---poster boards will come home tomorrow and they will complete these at home--they can use crayon, oil pastels, paint, marker, etc...they just need to COVER the entire poster board.  These are due back October 22.

They also were invited to participate in the VFW Patriot's Pen Essay contest with the theme "How to be a Good American".  We have been brainstorming and will start developing our essays tomorrow in class.  The majority of the work on this will be done here at school, but I encourage you to talk to them about it as well.  These will be due Monday, October 11.

We have Mass with our Falcon Faith Families tomorrow at 8am.  Students should plan to wear their FFF shirts they received Monday.

Please check out what we have going on into next week and throughout the month of October--it's a busy one!    Our Upcoming Week

Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend!

Mrs. Nielson

Happy Friday! 09/24/21

We had a great week, but we especially had a fun day today.  The kids worked so hard all week as there were many tests, but they persevered and made it through!  I am so proud of their Wonder posters and reports, which they had fun sharing with one another.  They were also given a surprise pizza party at the end of the school day--Cole's great-grandpa was so grateful for the birthday cards they had made for him that he wanted to give them a pizza party--it was a fun surprise for all!

Here is what we have going on this coming week-

if you are helping with trash pick-up, please meet Mrs. Ackely and others on the northwest bleachers of the stadium.  We generally meet towards the last 5-10 minutes of the game to get everyone their gloves and bags--we will be picking up both the trash and the recycling separately.  If you don't already attend the games, you will be able to get in after the fourth quarter begins.  It takes a little bit for the stands to clear up before we can get going.  Thank you to all of you who have signed up for this game or another--it's so appreciated by all!

I have also updated the class website with some new pictures.

Good afternoon!

We are having a great week in 6th grade.  We have been focusing on Figurative Language in Reading, while reading Wonder.  The students have really been enjoying this book--I enjoy our discussions in class.

Today we spent some time looking through my class website--they loved seeing all of the pictures I had posted--I also pointed out that they may want to peek at the calendar feature (linked below) to give them a sense of what is happening each week.  They have been good using their planners and filling out what is due each day--I hope to see that continue.  Also, thank you for signing off on their planners--this helps us all.

What's Happening This Week

If anyone has interest in being a room parent, please contact Margaret Branner or Kelly Quinlin.  I think they were still looking for a couple within the middle school classes.  I think it's a pretty painless position :)  I appreciate you all as it really takes a village from both a school and home standpoint to make this all so successful.

Our class will have Mass roles next Thursday (September 9)--Geordynn will read, Addy will say the response, Julia, Walker, Avah and Kolyn will say the petitions, Connolly and Kayla will bring up the gifts, Jade and Ryan will song lead, Cole, Kyler, and Charles will serve, and Colin will run the projector.  Please feel free to join us for that Mass or any of our school Masses.

Enjoy the rest of the week and the LONG weekend!

Thanks for all you do!

6th Grade Happenings 08/24/2021

Good afternoon 6th grade families,

We have already had a busy week!  The students are doing so great jumping right back into routine and schedules.

A few notes for the week---we will be attending Mass both Thursday and Friday at 8am.  Please remember to have your students dress in appropriate Mass attire (see Mrs. Quinlin's note from this morning for more detail).  There will be an opportunity to change clothing after Mass if your student desires.

Please be sure to check out our class website with up to date pictures and other information.  I will try to update pictures at least once a week--as a parent myself, I sure enjoy seeing what's going on throughout my child's day--I hope you enjoy seeing these as well!  Mrs. Nielson's Class Site

Finally--I wanted to share a bit about how I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math.  These classes are generally taught with a Flipped Classroom model--typically the nightly "homework" will be to watch a video that has me teaching a lesson--these are generally 10-15 minutes each and are found within Google Classroom.  When they get to class the next day, we'll touch base about the video and the notes they took, and then they'll use the majority of the class time to work on the book assignment.  While they are working, I am here helping, answering questions, as are their classmates.

There may be times when the book comes home and assignments aren't fully completed, but for the most part, their nightly math homework will be a video.  I have attached a letter that describes this more greater detail.  It is very new to you and to the 6th graders, but it is something I have done for years here at St. Gregory's.  The students tend to enjoy it a bit more as it creates a more calm and collaborative classroom environment.  They did one lesson like this in 5th grade and seemed pretty excited this morning when I was sharing this information with them.

Please also note I have attached our Circle of Grace parent letter--this year's topic is about safe and unsafe situations, along with feelings and emotions.  We started it yesterday and will continue through this week and a few days into next week.

If you have any questions with math or anything else, please be sure to reach out with any questions.

NW Football Trash Pick up Information

6th grade families--

To follow up with my note in my back-to-school letter I had mentioned that 7th and 8th graders help raise money for their class trip by picking up trash at the end of the Bearcat Football games.  We encourage 6th graders to help out as much as possible as well to help bank some money for their future trips.  We like to use the saying, “Many hands make light work.”  Here is a Sign-up Genius link put together by Mrs. Gastler.  Please let me or Mrs. Gastler know if you have any questions.

Here is some more information that we generally send out to our 6th-8th grade students regarding the trash pick-up.

We generally have a great turnout of school families and we are done picking up trash at the end of a game in about 15-20 minutes. Our school receives $125 per game--a great moneymaker for our students when you consider the minimal effort that is required when we all pitch in to help out.

Families can sign-up via the attached Sign-up Genius link.  Please make note of which games you signed up for, and if you are unable to attend a game in which you signed up, please let one of the teachers know.

The home Bearcat games for this fall are:

Thursday, September 9 6:00pm

Saturday, September 25 1:30pm

Saturday, October 9 1:30pm

Saturday, October 30 2:00pm (Homecoming)

Saturday, November 13 1:30pm

**Additional play-off games could be added.

If your family does not attend the game, we ask that you please listen to the game on the radio (KXCV) and make plans to be at the stadium in the 4th quarter. We meet in the northwest end zone of the stadium to put on plastic gloves and get the trash bags right before the game ends. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the school office or e-mail your child’s teacher. Thanks for your support!

08/17/2021 6th Grade Happenings

Good morning, 6th grade parents.

It was such a joy to see the students last night--thank you to all for making it a point to touch base before the first day of school.

All forms you received last night can be signed and brought back Thursday.  The students won't have PE until Monday so no worries if their PE shoes were still at home.

Just a few reminders--Thursday is a 1/2 day--we will release at 12:30.

Even with free lunches, students are still welcome to bring their own and can purchase milk if they would like.  You also can add money to your students' lunch accounts if they are interested in extra entrees.  See Mrs. Quinlin for more information in that department.

We do eat lunch around 11:20 each day.  They are more than welcome to bring a snack--they may choose to eat it in the morning or later in the day.  I am flexible with that--just as long as they keep their areas cleaned up and free of crumbs.

I enjoyed hearing about the students' summer--if possible, please email or text (My Cell: (952) 838-5310) me a few pictures that your child would like to share.  We are going to spend Thursday morning talking and listening to one another and I know I would sure enjoy seeing some of their summer adventures!

Enjoy the last couple of days of summer!

See you all soon!
