Interested in participating in the Symposium? Here is what you need to know.
You can register for the event by filling out the form here.
Registration closes on November 24th.
Early Bird Discount - If you register by Friday, November 11th: $10
After Friday, November 11th: $20
The registration fee will cover food and facility costs. We do not want this fee to prevent anyone from being able to participate so please email tech@stevenson-school.org if the cost presents any issue.
If you choose to participate, you will be preparing a presentation (maximum 10 minutes) on a technological solution to help solve or ameliorate a student mental health problem. For example (this is for illustrative purposes only and is obviously not a real solution), after reviewing scientific research from reliable sources and interviewing a mental health professional, you might find that there is evidence to suggest that performing 10 jumping jacks every hour results in an overall increase in perceived mental health among teens. As a result, you develop an app called JumpForHealth that teaches students how to do jumping jacks and gives them an audible alert every hour to remind them to complete the exercises.
While you may certainly develop (i.e. code) a working application using the programming language and operating system of your choice, this is not a requirement. You could just develop an app prototype that thoroughly illustrates how your app will work once it is developed.
Your presentation could be done in a myriad of ways and we do not want to limit your creativity by giving you requirements that are too restrictive. However, if you would like detailed information on one way to go about this, we recommend going through code.org's The Design Process unit, which will guide you through all aspects of the app design process including how to do the prototype. Again, you do not have to follow this format. You may also find this example code.org app presentation helpful.
You can participate in the symposium as a team or individually!
The winning individual/team will receive mentoring from industry experts to discuss how their idea could be developed towards a working solution.
Symposium judges will score each presentation based on this rubric. The individual/team with the highest score will receive the award.
Yes! We will provide lunch.
