Patents (or standards)
Program Outcome 7: (Ability to Learn)
1.1 (Tools) Students will be familiar with the use of standard search engines and keywords for an undirected search for information relevant to a specific project, familiar with the use of directed searches, starting from a known-good site and searching for information at that site relevant to a specific project and familiar with resources for compression/decompression of information.
Patent - Parking assist system
https://patents.justia.com/patent/11900694
The patent above describes a parking assist system that is applied to the vehicle itself which assists in finding a parking space. The system uses an environmental information obtainer and parked vehicle detector to determine the location of open parking spots. The system then displays the path to take on a screen to the driver for them to follow to the open space.
Patent - Parking space detection method and parking space detection system

The patent above describes a Chinese parking space detection method. The abstract states, "The method comprises the following steps: collecting parking lot images which comprise one or more idle and occupied parking spaces around the vehicle; inputting the parking lot image into a neural network model for image processing to obtain a center point coordinate and a center point probability of a parking space, a first coordinate and a first corner probability of 4 corner points and an offset of the 4 corner points relative to the center point coordinate; calculating second coordinates of the 4 corner points according to the coordinates of the central point and the offset of the 4 corner points relative to the coordinates of the central point; correcting the second coordinates of the 4 corner points by adopting the first coordinates of the 4 corner points to obtain actual coordinates and actual corner point probability of the 4 corner points; and carrying out parking space detection based on the center point coordinates and the center point probability and the actual coordinates and the actual angle point probability of the 4 angle points." The patent describes a method of how to train a model for parking spot detection. Here are some pictures from the patent:
Patent - Parking space detection method
https://patents.google.com/patent/CN1828689A/en
The present invention introduces a Flame Image Process form for identifying and determining the length of available parking spaces, regardless of whether they are marked. This method allows for the identification of free parking spaces and their lengths, aiding users in efficiently parking their vehicles without the need for time-consuming searches. Two main embodiments are proposed: one directly notifies users of suitable parking spaces based on their vehicle length, while the other involves users providing their vehicle length information for server verification, which then notifies them of suitable parking spaces. Both embodiments aim to optimize parking space usage and streamline the parking process. The invention includes methods, terminals, and servers for implementing these parking space detection techniques effectively.
Patent - System and method for detection of free parking space
https://patents.justia.com/patent/11030469
The disclosed detection system, integrated into vehicles, is designed to identify available parking spaces. It consists of an input unit capturing the surrounding perspective of the vehicle and a processing unit receiving sequential images from at least one sensor. The processing unit identifies polygons representing parking slots in the images, then transforms them into a bird's-eye-view using a homography matrix. After detecting quadrilaterals corresponding to parking slots, it reverts the bird's-eye-view image to the perspective view around the vehicle. This enables analysis of real-world coordinates of the parking slots, facilitating determination of their type by computing real-world dimensions.
