About Me:
I grew up in rural central Georgia, in the small town of Monticello (approx. 3,000 people). Ever seen the Joe Pesci movie "My Cousin Vinny?" That town is where I grew up; aside from the director setting the movie in Alabama, most of that is accurate. The Sac-O-Suds is real, and has been there for decades!
I'm a huge Georgia Bulldogs fan, which can sometimes be challenging out here in Husker Nation. Except for the past few years. Go Dawgs! Sic 'em!
I graduated in 2001 with a B.S. in Outdoor Education from Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, GA. After working in the field of summer camps for a few years, I decided to return to school, this time for Middle Grades Education, with endorsements in Social Studies and Science, at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, GA (now Georgia Southern University-Savannah). In December 2016, I completed my M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction from Doane University. My favorite thing about my personal educational journey is that I feel it provided me with the tools to effectively bring experiential education (a key part of outdoor education) into the classroom. I feel that if a student can relate to a historical figure or situation because they have experienced something similar in their own life, it helps history come alive (pardon the cliché).
Not long after my time in Savannah, I married my wife, Sarah. She is from Iowa, and teaches elementary PE in Murray, NE. We have three kids: Elizabeth(15), Matthew(13), and Abigail(11).
I come from a family of teachers: my mother(science), father(social studies), aunt(elementary), uncle(math), sister(english), and neice(english/lit) were/are all teachers, as well as my wife and two of her siblings(PE and elementary ed). My chosen profession may have been preordained!
I still work at camp! During the summer, I manage the ropes program at YMCA Camp Kitaki in Louisville, NE. And yes, the personality and sense of humor my students see is pretty much the same one the campers see.
