I research and write in the area of biblical studies; in particular, I examine the history and religions of Israel during the Persian, Hellenistic and Roman periods and nascent Christianity. I am especially intrigued by pseudepigraphic, deuterocanonical and apocalyptic literature. 

What have I been up to recently? With Matthew Goff and Joshua Scott, I've edited a fascinating collection of essays: Enoch Studies in the 2020s: New Vistas; DCLS 63 (De Gruyter, 2026). My other current contributions on 1 Enoch include Oxford's Jewish Annotated Apocrypha and Brill's Encyclopedia of the Dead Sea Scrolls (both forthcoming rev. ed.). I also write currently the Commentary on 1 Maccabees for the Wisdom Series (and collaborate with Michael Duggan, who writes on 2 Maccabees). Work on 1 Maccabees move swiftly with three (!) selections on this book submitted for publication and a substantive meeting on 1 Maccabees planned with  Matthias Henze (Rice University). 

On the subject of angels and demons, Siam Bhayro and I co-edit the Oxford Handbook on Angels and Demons in the Bible and Related Literature. And looking to future projects, I have been invited to write the Commentary onThe Book of Revelation for The New Testament in its Second Temple Period Context Series, edited by Archie Wright, Ron Herms, and Loren Stuckenbruch (Cascade). 

Publications in the last five years include juried articles and essays on 1 Maccabees, visionary experiences, Aramaic and Greek Enoch, and gender and religion. These appear in Biblische Notizen and edited volumes such as The Aramaic Books of Enoch and Related Literature from Qumran (JSJSup; Brill) and Torah in Early Jewish Imaginations (Mohr Siebeck). 

Past publications (articles, essays, and edited volumes) also explore geographical traditions in ancient Jewish works and spatiality in apocalyptic literature; angels, demons, and the watcher traditions; and women in ancient Jewish literature. Finally, Prof. Coblentz Bautch has guest-edited thematic issues of juried journals and with colleagues edited two Festschriften, along with her own monograph and writings for non-specialists.
