Recent federal immigration regulations have changed the immigration process for many F-1 students applying for Optional Practical Training (OPT). These changes do not affect every student in the same way. How the regulations apply to you depends on factors such as when you entered the United States, whether you have traveled internationally after September 15, 2026, your current immigration status, and your expected graduation date.
Students who become subject to the updated regulations may need additional immigration authorization, including an Extension of Stay (EOS), before or in connection with applying for OPT. Government approval may require filing fees and significant processing time.
Because OPT planning now involves multiple timelines and immigration requirements, students should begin planning with ISS well before their final semester. Do not rely solely on general OPT filing deadlines, as your individual process may require additional steps.
Before applying for OPT, schedule an appointment with ISS to review your eligibility and the current application process.
