At St David’s School we promote respect for all and value every individual child. We value PSHE as one way to support children’s development as human beings, to enable them to understand and respect who they are, to empower them with a voice and to equip them for life and learning.
At St David's School we are conscious that children connected with the military community have a turbulent life. They may be constantly moving to new international environments and adapting to cultural differences in their environment, many attending boarding school across borders from where their parents are posted. Our intention is for all pupils to have the skills to be able to make friends, tolerate and respect others that have different opinions, religions and customs with interest and curiosity.
How do we inspire and empower pupils to succeed in these lessons?
The Jigsaw program of study helps pupils to understand the wider world and their responsibilities, including how to stay safe as global citizens outside of the military community.
Jigsaw lessons in St David’s School focus on allowing pupils to talk openly in a safe place, to disagree, agree and challenge one another respectfully.
The Jigsaw program in KS1 and KS2 inspires and empowers pupils to be active citizens by introducing scenarios and talking points where pupils take on different roles to explore alternative perspectives .These role play scenarios allow children to see through the eyes of others in a safe environment without feeling in the spotlight. They engage pupils and challenge their thoughts, opinions and common stereotypes in a safe environment.
To ensure progression and a spiral curriculum, we use the Jigsaw scheme from FS2-Y6, the mindful approach to PSHE, as our chosen teaching and learning programme. Jigsaw is a teaching and learning programme which includes the statutory RSHE (Relationships Education, Sex Education and Health Education) and has a strong focus on emotional and mental health and wellbeing.
In Foundation Stage PSED (personal, social and educational development) focuses on pupils developing an understanding of how to be kind, how to share and how to respect each other and the classroom resources. Children are taught key social skills to enable them to build friendships and manage their own behaviour.
In FS2, children take part in a short circle time once a week, adapted from the Jigsaw scheme to suit the needs of the class.
In KS1 the Jigsaw program provides children with a better understanding of themselves whilst developing their understanding of how to be tolerant, empathetic and kind.
In KS2 the Jigsaw curriculum introduces new learning about growing up and reflection opportunities personal to pupils' individual development.
The Jigsaw Programme is aligned to the PSHE Association Programmes of Study for PSHE. This also supports the “Personal Development” and “Behaviour and Attitude” aspects required under the Ofsted Inspection Framework, as well as significantly contributing to the school’s Safeguarding and Equality Duties, the Government’s British Values agenda and the SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural) development opportunities provided for our children.
