2025 - 2026
December 1, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving surrounded by family and friends. Now we’re officially heading into the three-week countdown to Christmas break, and campus is already looking merry and bright! A huge thank-you to all the parent volunteers who spent their Sunday afternoon transforming our school for the holidays. And much to the students’ delight, our campus Elves on the Shelves have made their grand return! Be sure to scroll through the photos below to catch a glimpse of their mischievous reappearances throughout the classrooms.
This week we have Parent/Teacher Conferences on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you haven’t yet signed up for a conference time, please do so today, as the Sign-Up Genius will close tomorrow morning. Both days will have a 1:05pm early dismissal, and childcare will be available for students during their conference time.
Also this week, on Thursday, December 4th, we will gather for our annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and SCJ Christmas Market! The fun begins at 5:30 PM. This will be the perfect opportunity to bring your donation for our toy drive, The Giving Tree. Come shop for holiday treasures while enjoying live music from our very own SCJ Dad Band, The Clip Downs. And of course, no Christmas celebration would be complete without a special visit from Santa Claus himself! We can’t wait to kick off the Christmas season with you! 🎄✨

Please help us in donating gifts to the boys and girls of St. Cecilia School once again this Christmas! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas on campus!
November 24, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
It might have only been a two-day school week, but big things were happening on campus today! Mr. Ferris’ fourth grade class participated in their Walk Through California, and what an incredible experience it was. Our fourth graders stepped right into California history with hands-on activities, games, reenactments, and storytelling that truly made the past come alive! A huge thank-you to Mr. Ferris for continuing to bring this immersive learning opportunity to our school, and to all the parents who came out to cheer on our students. The kids looked fantastic in their historical costumes, some of them were nearly unrecognizable in their pioneer, explorer, and mission-era attire!
Also today, Ms. K’s 1st graders had the best surprise! Their pen pal letters arrived all the way from Chicago! Mrs. Cohen’s son, who teaches in Chicago with Teach for America, helped his students write to ours, and the excitement was off the charts. The kids were glued to their letters, eagerly sounding out every word, comparing drawings, and giggling at the fun details their new buddies shared. And thanks to the photos Mrs. Cohen projected on the screen, they even got to see their Chicago friends. It was pure joy in first grade!
We had such a fun Spirit Week last week! A big thank you to Mrs. Clark and our amazing Student Council for planning each of the themed days. Not even the rain could stop the SCJ spirit from shining! Students showed up with crazy hats and hair, silly socks, cozy pajamas, and enjoyed popsicles and pizza! Be sure to scroll down and enjoy all the photos from this memorable week.
We wrapped up Spirit Week with a beautiful School Family Service Day, where students created fuzzy-sock care packages for cancer patients. There’s truly nothing better than watching our School Families, Kinder through 8th, come together, collaborate, and build meaningful connections across the grades. All while working on something for others in need. It warms our hearts every time.
And to top it all off, we ended the week with Kona Ice, a special treat from our incredible Turkey Trot Chairs, Mrs. Oates and Mrs. Austin. The excitement when the truck pulled up was priceless, wide eyes, huge smiles, and pure joy all around!
Last Wednesday, our 8th graders participated in Crespi High School’s annual Regatta Boat Race. Several surrounding Catholic schools joined in, and our 8th graders launched the wooden boats they built in Ms. Jenkins’ class. Those of us back on campus were able to Zoom into the live feed and cheer them on as their boats hit the water at the Crespi pool. It was a fun and memorable experience for everyone!
We closed out the week with a beautiful Mass offered for our incredible teachers. Our faculty led the liturgy with such reverence and joy, making it a truly meaningful end to Spirit Week. Thank you to Mrs. Moffat for preparing the Liturgy, to Mr. O for the wonderful music, and to all of our teachers who participated so thoughtfully.
A few important reminders:
Tuesday is our last day before Thanksgiving Break and will be a minimum day with a 1:05 dismissal.
School resumes on Monday, December 1st.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held on December 2nd and 3rd. Both days are minimum days with a 1:05 dismissal. Childcare will be available for your student during your conference time. Please remember to sign up for your conference slot. Links are included below.

Now that we have entered the month of November, students may begin wearing SCJ approved sweatpants to school. Please note that all shirts, whether uniform tops or spirit wear, must extend at least 2 inches below the top of the sweatpant waistband at all times, even when arms are lifted. We understand current fashion trends lean toward shorter, form-fitting tops, however this style is not appropriate for school. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring students continue to dress modestly and appropriately while on campus.

Snapshots Around Campus
Our Junior Academic Decathlon students met for the first time and were excited to find out the theme for this year - the ocean! They enjoyed looking through the book they will be studying throughout the course of the program.
Ms. K’s 1st graders received a very special surprise today, their pen-pal letters from a 1st grade class in Chicago! Mrs. Cohen’s son, who is currently teaching with Teach for America, helped arrange the exchange, and his students wrote sweet letters to ours. The excitement in the room was priceless as our students eagerly read through their notes. They even got to see photos of their new buddies, thanks to the pictures Mrs. Cohen shared on the screen. ✉️😊
On Monday, our fourth graders participated in a wonderful educational experience through Walkthrough California. This amazing two-and-a-half-hour presentation guided students through the rich history and diverse geography of our state. Students enjoyed showcasing their expertise in social studies vocabulary and answering California-specific questions in an engaging, game-show style format. It was a memorable learning opportunity they are sure to remember for years to come.
The 6th grade took an exciting virtual field trip today all the way to Ancient Egypt! With just a few clicks, they “traveled” across the desert to explore the Great Pyramids of Giza, stood face-to-face with the mighty Sphinx, and floated down the Nile River, all without leaving their classroom. The students loved getting an up-close look at these incredible wonders of the ancient world, and their curiosity was overflowing with questions and discoveries at every stop. What an adventure!

Dear St. Cyril Families,
Friday was our annual Turkey Trot, and while the weather didn’t exactly cooperate, nothing could dampen our school spirit! A huge thank you to Laura Oates and Caroline Austin for their incredible work organizing this event. Over 200 students, from Preschool through 8th grade, laced up their sneakers and raced around the Hall, competing for the coveted Golden Goblet. Cheers, chants, and laughter filled the air as our students showed off their determination, teamwork, and SCJ pride. It was a fantastic reminder that rain or shine, our community always shows up in full spirit! Thank you to everyone for your incredible fundraising efforts, we truly are the small school that does BIG things! Because of your generosity and support, we raised over $76,000! We are so blessed and deeply grateful for our amazing community whose dedication and spirit continue to make such a difference. Together, we’ve once again shown the power of what SCJ can achieve!
Also last week, the second group of our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on our Mock Trial Prosecution Team traveled downtown to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse to compete against another LA County middle school. Congratulations to BOTH teams, and their coaches, for advancing to the next round! We are so proud of you all. And thank you to the Foundation for St. Cyril School, for sponsoring our teams each year. We can’t wait to hear how you do Tuesday night.
Tuesday is the end of the first trimester. We are 1/3rd the way through the school year. Time flies when we are having fun learning. Please take a moment to sign up for Parent/Teacher conferences via the links below. These conferences are short, but a worthy time to connect with your students’ teachers to hear about their growth, progress and goals for the next trimester.
And of course, this week is SCJ Spirit Week! Sponsored by our amazing Student Council, each day brings a new theme and a chance for our students to show off their school spirit and creativity. Be sure to check out the flyer below for all the fun dress-up themes and activities planned for the week, it’s going to be a great one!

This past week our 8th graders read to the kindergarten class, and it was a hit! Smiles and laughter filled the room as big kids and little kids shared stories together.
November 12, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
Last week, we celebrated our first Cultural Insight of the school year in honor of Día de los Muertos. A very special thank you to Michaela Chaterjee for once again coordinating this beautiful experience for our school community. Our outdoor classroom came alive with the vibrant performance of Danza Mexica Ajolote, whose dancers share their traditions with us year after year. Students were able to not only watch the traditional dances but also join in the Friendship Circles led by the dancers. Together, our students placed items on the Ofrenda to honor and remember loved ones who have passed, gently surrounding those offerings with marigold petals, a touching and meaningful expression of remembrance and culture.
Also last week, the first group of our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders on our Mock Trial Defense Team traveled downtown to the Stanley Mosk Courthouse to compete against another LA County middle school. This program is run each year by Teach Democracy and is generously sponsored by the Foundation for St. Cyril School. Jim Fitzgerald, an SCJ alumni parent, has led the program for many years and is joined this season by Michael Blake, Deborah Wadleigh, and several other dedicated parent volunteers who spend every Friday and Sunday practicing with our students in preparation for their day in court. For those unfamiliar, Mock Trial is a simulated legal proceeding where students take on roles such as attorneys and witnesses and argue a hypothetical case in front of real courtroom judges. Through this experience, students develop invaluable skills, public speaking, debate, critical thinking, confidence, and a foundational understanding of the legal process. It is truly extraordinary to watch middle school students stand in a real courtroom and present their case with such poise and professionalism. Next week, our Prosecution Team heads downtown to compete. We are so proud of both teams and will be eagerly awaiting news to see if our students advance to the next round!
We ended the week with a beautiful school Mass led by our 3rd graders. Their reverence, confidence, and joyful participation made the celebration truly special. Thank you to Mrs. Moffat, Mrs. Lopez, and Mr. O for preparing our students so thoughtfully and guiding them in leading our school community in prayer.
Next week, we are all looking forward to our annual Turkey Trot on Friday, November 14th! There is still time to register your student and continue fundraising for this incredible community event. Many classes have already surpassed their goals, amazing job, SCJ! Let’s keep that momentum going! We can’t wait to see everyone in their SCJ spirit wear out on the track next Friday, cheering one another on and celebrating together as a school family.
With appreciation for our SCJ community,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team
Mrs. Cohen, Mr. Ferris & Mrs, Lopez

**Sweatpants**
Now that we have entered the month of November, students may begin wearing SCJ approved sweatpants to school. Please note that all shirts, whether uniform tops or spirit wear, must extend at least 2 inches below the top of the sweatpant waistband at all times, even when arms are lifted. We understand current fashion trends lean toward shorter, form-fitting tops, however this style is not appropriate for school. Thank you for your cooperation in ensuring students continue to dress modestly and appropriately while on campus.

Snapshots Around Campus
Día de los Muertos
November 3, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
What a wonderful week we had last week, one filled with moments that will surely become lasting memories! To start, our entire school joined together on Google Meet to watch the 1st graders’ Saint Presentations. Seeing them stand confidently in front of family and friends, sharing their research on their chosen Saints, was truly inspiring. They did an incredible job reading, presenting, and fully embracing their roles, and their costumes were amazing! A huge thank you to Ms. K for preparing them so beautifully and guiding them through such a meaningful experience.
And then of course, we had a truly spooktacular Halloween celebration on Friday! Each class enjoyed fun Halloween crafts, games, and party activities before heading outside for our annual Halloween Carnival. A heartfelt thank you to our incredible chairs, Karen Gonzalez and Luella Guevara, for all of their hard work and planning, as well as all of the parent volunteers who manned all the games and stations around campus. We are also so grateful to Amazon Fresh for once again generously donating the pizza, salads, sandwiches, drinks, and pumpkins! The carnival wouldn’t have been the same without our inflatable game sponsors, Smiling Sea Dentistry and Art Gholian Law Group , thank you for making it extra special for our students. It takes a village to create such an incredible day for our students, thank you to everyone who helped make Friday so magical.
The costumes this year were some of the most creative we have ever seen! We had vending machines, walking snack packs, Power Rangers, Minions, Glinda and Elphaba, Taylor Swift, and even K-Pop Demon Hunters! And of course, our faculty Halloween theme did not disappoint, this year they transformed into The Wizard of Oz: Dorothy, the Lion, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Wizard, the Wicked Witch of the West, and our very own Glinda! This year’s staff theme may have topped them all.
And no Halloween at SCJ would be complete without our incredible Trunk or Treat cars! From pirate ships to Sesame Street to K-Pop Demon Hunters, families went above and beyond , and the students absolutely loved trick-or-treating their way through each one.
And to top off an already memorable week, we gathered together on Saturday for our first Family Mass of the school year. Once again, we had the joy of seeing our 1st Grade Saints process in so beautifully, a moment that never fails to touch the heart. Our 7th and 8th grade student leaders served with reverence and maturity, and hearing our PreK students lift their sweet little voices singing the liturgical music was truly precious. A very special thank you to Mrs. Moffat and Mr. O for preparing these four grade levels so thoughtfully and with such care. It was a beautiful afternoon of prayer, community, and faith shared as a school family.
Then, after Mass, many of us headed home to watch Game 7 and witness the Dodgers make history with back-to-back World Series wins! Saturday night’s game was an absolute nail-biter, going all the way into the 11th inning and ending with a thrilling, game-winning double play. We Dodger fans never lost faith — and our boys in blue delivered!
It’s hard to believe we’ve already turned the calendar to November! The holiday season is quickly approaching, and our countdown to Thanksgiving has officially begun. This time of year, always brings such a special spirit to campus, gratitude, reflection, and joy, and we are excited for all the moments, celebrations, and learning ahead this month. Bring on the pumpkin pies, gratitude projects, and all the November magic!
With appreciation for our SCJ community,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team

Dear St. Cyril Families,
Thank you to all who joined us for Open House last Thursday evening! We loved welcoming you into our classrooms and hope you enjoyed getting a glimpse of the amazing learning happening not only in your child’s class, but throughout our campus. Our teachers work hard each year to bring their curriculum to life in new and engaging ways, and we hope you were able to see that dedication and creativity firsthand.
Now, we’re looking ahead to next week as we gear up for Halloween on Friday! The excitement is already building as students try to guess what their teachers will dress up as, and everyone is looking forward to our annual Halloween Carnival on campus.
To help ensure a safe, comfortable, and positive experience for all our students—especially our younger ones—we ask that families please review and follow these costume guidelines:
No Masks: Masks are not permitted, as they can obstruct vision and create safety concerns.
No Weapons (Real or Toy): Please do not include toy weapons of any kind (swords, guns, props that resemble weapons, etc.).
Limited Face Make-Up: Make-up should be minimal and not cover the entire face.
Appropriate Attire: Costumes should be modest and suitable for a school environment.
Age-Appropriate: Costumes should not be overly scary, gory, or frightening.
Comfort & Mobility: Costumes should allow your child to move comfortably and participate safely in all school activities.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us make this Halloween a fun and safe celebration for everyone!
In addition, we look forward to celebrating Mass on Saturday, November 1st, with our Pre-K, 1st, 7th, and 8th grade leaders. All students who attend Mass in their school uniform on Saturday will receive a Free Dress Pass for Monday, November 3rd.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. We’re looking forward to another wonderful week on campus!

October 20, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
It was a short but wonderfully full week on campus. A huge thank you to Mrs. Clark and our Student Council for organizing an incredible Think Pink Day last Wednesday. Seeing our students and staff dressed head to toe in pink was a heartwarming sight, from hoodies and t-shirts to sunglasses and headbands, our usual green and gold transformed into a sea of pink! Thank you to all the families who contributed by sending $5 for pink free dress and to those who supported Student Council’s sales throughout the day. Together, our community raised an impressive amount for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk this weekend. We are so proud of our students for showing up, giving generously, and standing together for such a meaningful cause.
The results of our first STAR test scores are being sent home today. This assessment provides key insights that we use to guide and adapt our curriculum to best meet student needs. It's crucial to understand that these scores are simply one data point, offering a snapshot of performance on a given day, and do not represent the complete picture of your child's overall learning and proficiency. As Halloween approaches, we are excited for our students to celebrate with their classmates on Friday, October 31st. We love seeing the creativity and fun that costumes bring to our school day.
To ensure a safe, comfortable, and positive experience for all our students, especially our younger students, we ask that you please adhere to the following costume guidelines:
No Masks: Masks are not permitted as they can obstruct vision and create safety concerns.
No Weapons (Real or Toy): Please do not allow costumes to include toy weapons of any kind (swords, guns, props that resemble weapons, etc.).
Limited Face Make-Up: Make-up should be minimal and should not cover the entire face. Full face paint can be difficult to manage throughout the day and may alter a child's recognizable features.
Appropriate Attire: Costumes should not be too revealing or contain elements that could be considered inappropriate for a school environment.
Age-Appropriate: Please be mindful of the ages of all children in our school community. Costumes should not be overly scary, gory, or frightening, as they can cause distress to younger students.
Comfort & Mobility: Costumes should allow your child to participate comfortably and safely in all school activities throughout the day.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us make this a fun and secure Halloween celebration for everyone.
Looking ahead, we’re so excited to welcome our families to Fall Open House this Thursday evening from 5:30-7:00pm! Our classrooms are bursting with creativity, filled with student projects and displays that showcase all the incredible learning happening across grade levels. This is a wonderful opportunity for parents to step inside the classrooms, see the progress your children are making, and connect with our amazing teachers. They can’t wait to share the students’ hard work and the vibrant energy that fills our campus every day!
As we move into another exciting week, we are reminded of how grateful we are for our incredible students, dedicated teachers, and supportive families who make St. Cyril such a special community. Thank you for all you do to stay involved and engaged in your child’s school experience. We look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday evening.
With appreciation for our SCJ community,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team
Mrs. Cohen, Mr. Ferris & Mrs, Lopez
Note from Mrs. Cohen
I want to personally thank our St. Cyril community for the incredible generosity shown during Think Pink Day. Together, you helped raise funds for my Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk that was this past Saturday. Your support means more to me than I can express. The money raised goes directly toward life-saving research and resources for those whose journeys are far more challenging than my own.
This January will mark three years since my diagnosis, and while I was blessed that my cancer was treatable, I participate in this walk to honor and help others still fighting. This was my second year walking, and it was such an empowering and emotional morning, one filled with hope, determination, and gratitude. Walking beside me were Mrs. Ceciliane, Ms. Jenkins, Ms. Condon, Ms. Kingsbury, Mrs. Olgin, Mrs. Blake and a number of 8th graders and their moms.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you for supporting this cause and reminding me once again what makes our SCJ community so special. I am forever grateful. 💗
With gratitude and appreciation,
Mrs. Cohen

Dear St. Cyril Families,
We would like to remind you that we are now halfway through Trimester 1.We strongly encourage you to log into our student information system Gradelink this week to access your child’s Mid-Trimester Progress Report. Checking grades on Gradelink allows you to see current grades and address any potential academic concerns early—while there is still plenty of time to improve. If you have questions about specific assignments or grades, please contact your child’s teacher directly.
Last week was another full and productive week on campus! On Friday, our students participated in our scheduled earthquake and shelter-in-place drills, and we could not be prouder of how well everything went. These drills ran smoothly thanks to the preparation and teamwork of both students and teachers. Throughout the week, teachers took time to review procedures with their classes and even practiced the drills themselves to ensure everything would run safely and efficiently. Students participated in both indoor and outdoor earthquake drills, as well as a shelter-in-place drill that began during recess, requiring them to quickly and calmly find the nearest classroom. We are incredibly proud of our students’ attentiveness during the preparation process and their calm focus during the drills themselves. A special thank you to our parents as well for reinforcing these safety conversations at home, your partnership helps our students feel prepared and confident.
Also on Friday, our Student Council members attended a leadership retreat at Providence High School, designed to help them grow in confidence and strengthen their leadership skills for the year ahead. The retreat offered a meaningful balance of team-building activities, leadership workshops, and reflection opportunities, all focused on deepening their understanding of what it means to lead with integrity, collaboration, and school spirit. It was a wonderful opportunity for our student leaders to connect, learn, and prepare to serve our school community.
In addition, we celebrated Mass on Friday which was led by our 5th grade class. Thank you to Mrs. Moffat, Mrs. Ceceliane, and Mr. O. for preparing them to lead a beautiful Mass.
Earlier this week, our 6th graders took a short walk across the street to visit our partner school, Valley Beth Shalom. For the past four years, St. Cyril has shared a wonderful interfaith partnership with VBS, where our 6th graders pair with their 6th grade classmates to learn about each other’s faith traditions through shared experiences and visits between our Synagogue and Church communities. On Thursday, accompanied by Mrs. Cohen, Mrs. Moffat, and Mr. Ferris, our students learned about the Jewish holiday of Sukkot and spent time inside the beautifully decorated Sukkah, enjoying conversation and connection with their VBS buddies. In December, we will have the joy of welcoming their class to our campus for a scavenger hunt and tour of our church. We are truly blessed to continue this meaningful exchange of faith, friendship, and understanding between our two communities.
Also on Thursday, we hosted our annual High School Night in the Outdoor Classroom. Representatives from nine of our partner Catholic high schools joined us for a fair-style evening, where admissions officers and student ambassadors met with our 6th–8th grade families. It was a wonderful event that not only helped families explore high school options but also highlighted our strong alumni connections, many of our former students returned to proudly represent their schools and share their high school experiences with our community.
As you can see, it’s been a wonderfully full week on campus, filled with meaningful learning experiences for our students. We feel truly blessed each day to be part of our St. Cyril family, where faith, learning, and community thrive together. We’re looking forward to another inspiring and productive week ahead!
With appreciation for our SCJ community,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team

Many of our SCJ alumni were ambassadors for their high schools during High School Night last week. We love having them come back to talk to our Jr. High students about their schools.

The retreat provided a balance of team-building activities, leadership workshops, and reflection opportunities, all with the goal of strengthening their ability to serve our school community.
Our 6th graders had a wonderful visit to VBS this week to learn about the Jewish holiday of Sukkot. Students sat together with their buddies inside the beautifully decorated sukkah and learned about the meaning of the holiday from Rabbi Avi and Rabbi Yael. Afterward, they spent time getting to know their buddies and enjoyed some fun and games out on the field, a perfect way to build friendship and understanding across our faith communities.

Dear St. Cyril Families,
This past week concluded with one of our most joyful traditions, the Blessing of the Animals Prayer Service. Our outdoor classroom was transformed into a lively celebration of God’s creation, filled with the sounds of dogs barking, birds chirping, and even the quiet presence of some special guests like bearded dragons, guinea pigs, bunnies, and cats. For students who couldn’t bring their pets, photos of their furry (and not-so-furry) friends were proudly held up. Fr. Danny led us in a beautiful prayer and blessing, sprinkling Holy Water as students and parents did their best to lovingly wrangle their pets. It was a heartwarming sight to see our community come together in such a unique way, sharing the joy of their pets and the love they bring to our families.
Our fifth graders kicked off their first field trip of the year with a visit to the Griffith Observatory, where learning came alive through space, astronomy, and science. Students explored the wonders of the solar system, stars, and the universe through hands-on exhibits, powerful telescopes, and the immersive planetarium experience. The trip gave them a chance to connect classroom learning to real-world exploration in a fun and interactive way. Thank you, Mrs. Ceciliane, for planning such a wonderful adventure for our 5th graders and a special thank you to all of the parent chaperones.
After School Care Reminders: The Boys & Girls Club, who provides after school care for our students, require that all students are registered prior to attending. Please use this link: Registration and in order for your child to attend afterschool care.
If you are running late after pick up, emergency child care will be provided through the school office:
Emergency childcare time 3:10-4:10 (Mon-Thu) and 1:20-2:20 (Friday).
Cost per student $20.00 + $1.00 per minute after 4:10/2:20
This Thursday is our annual High School Night, beginning at 5:30pm in the Outdoor Classroom. This special evening is designed exclusively for our Jr. High families and provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with the admissions teams from our local Catholic high schools. In this intimate setting, you’ll be able to ask questions, gather valuable information, and learn more about the schools our students most often apply to. What makes the evening even more meaningful is the presence of our alumni, who will share their own experiences and insights about the high schools they chose after St. Cyril. It’s a unique chance to hear directly from those who have walked the same path and are now thriving in their next chapter.
We look forward to welcoming you to this important and informative night, created especially for our St. Cyril families!

Dear St. Cyril Families,
What an incredible evening we shared at this year’s Italian Dinner Dance on Friday! This event truly reflects what makes St. Cyril so special; families, alumni, teachers, and students all coming together to celebrate the heart of our community. We are deeply grateful to everyone who played a part in creating such a memorable night. This beloved St. Cyril tradition continues to shine year after year because of the dedication, generosity, and spirit of so many in our community. The list of thank-you’s is long, but each one is richly deserved.
We’d like to give a huge thank you to Roni Eid, whose passion in the kitchen makes this event unforgettable year after year, and to Sami Eid for the gorgeous charcuterie board that wowed us all. We are also deeply grateful to Victor Zamora for his steady presence in the kitchen all week.
We want to recognize Debra Nicolaou for her tireless coordination and leadership, and our amazing co-chairs Sheena Laine and Chi Chi Emeson, whose commitment, positivity, and organization made every detail come together seamlessly. Thank you also to Jennifer Leung for her behind-the-scenes work with logistics, and to Ms. April, whose guidance with the student dances brought so much joy to the night. And to Mr. O. for helping with the music.
Special thanks to Claudia Fera (alumni volunteers), Karen Garcia (Glow Zone), Sabrina Hovsepian (decorations), Nikki and Troy Combes (bar- and who we hope come back to keep tending to our bar even after their son graduates this year), and Gina Sperazzo (liquor license). Your efforts brought color, fun, and flawless organization to every corner of the event.
To our kitchen and event helpers, Peter Seibold, Fabiola Torcavai and her family, Jenny Collins, Keshia Cain, Michael Mustac, and so many more, you made the behind-the-scenes magic happen. And to the many parents who gave countless hours—Danae Tucker, Grace Spann, Nataliya Kupchyk, Velinda and Robert Reyes, Nikki and Christian Schum-Harden, Jocelyn De Anda Galang, Leyla Sanford, Leliza Tiu, Navneil Kumar and Gabrielle, Jonah Rooney, Mariel Ocampo, Altagracia Mejia, Hilda Echeverrie, Jessy Richter-Maret, Claudia Seibold, Andy Collins, Julie Takayama, Dazmun Davis, Tanya and Jason Booke, Jennifer Mero, Natalie Gardner, Michelle Perez, Doris Martinez, Walberto Gochez, Rachanee Srisavasdi and Michael Miller, Tony Mustac, Saif and Christine Naaom, and Natalie Orloff and family, thank you for your energy, joy, and willingness to step in wherever needed.
All of the teachers are incredibly grateful for the thoughtful gifts of wine purchased by our generous parents. Each bottle was enjoyed and very much appreciated. Your kindness and generosity mean so much to the faculty, and it’s gestures like these that remind us how blessed we are to be part of such a caring and thoughtful community.
We’d like to thank Tricia Benson for capturing such wonderful photos of the students during their dances. The joy and smiles on their faces are truly priceless. A few of her wonderful photographs are featured in the Snapshots Around Campus section below for everyone to enjoy.
Lastly, but not least, we are also grateful to Amazon Fresh in Encino for their generous donations, and to our amazing Parent Association Board, Vicki Murphy, Sarah Mouawad, Jennifer Leung, Deborah Nicolau, Connie and Andy Alverez, for their leadership and support.
We would also like to thank the 6th grade class for leading such a beautiful Mass Friday afternoon. Thank you, Mr. O., Mrs. Moffat and Mr. Miller, for preparing them to lead.
Please join us on Friday for the Blessing of the Animals from 12:15pm - 1:05 pm in the Outdoor Classroom. This is one of St. Cyril's cherished traditions where families can join us with their family pets to receive a blessing from Fr. Danny. To ensure a safe and joyful experience for everyone:
All pets must be secured — whether in carriers, on leashes, or in another appropriate way (such as cages or tanks for birds and reptiles).
Please bring any supplies needed to clean up after your pet.
For the comfort of all, we kindly ask that pets who experience high anxiety around other animals, people, or large crowds remain at home.
If your pet is shy, unpredictable, or has passed away, you are warmly invited to bring a photo to be blessed instead. We look forward to sharing this meaningful celebration with you and your furry, feathered, or scaly friends!
Here’s to another week of learning, laughter, and the wonderful sense of community that makes St. Cyril so special.
Yours in faith and community,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team
Mrs. Cohen, Mr. Ferris & Mrs, Lopez

September 22, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
Another wonderful week of learning and growth here on campus last week! The energy at St. Cyril is contagious, there’s nothing quite like the sound of laughter echoing across the yard, the cheers of friendly competition on the field, and the buzz of curiosity filling our classrooms. Five weeks into the school year, we are so proud of the way our students are thriving, embracing challenges, building friendships, and immersing themselves fully in their learning experiences. The joy and enthusiasm they bring each day is a reminder of what makes our community so special. We look forward to carrying this momentum into the weeks ahead and to all the new opportunities for growth and connection that await.
Going home today are the 2025-2026 Family Income Survey and Annual Census. The Family Income Survey, to the extent possible, protects the identity of the families. The information gathered can assist the school in a variety of ways; such as the Title I program, resources through E-rate, and other grants. The name of a parent and student(s) is optional, the rest of the fields must be filled out. The Family Income Survey has been numbered to protect your privacy and any linking of this number to your family's name will be kept in strict confidence. The data collected from the Annual Census are used by the ADLA, the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA), US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), local and national philanthropy, and government agencies for multiple purposes. The accuracy of our data is essential to ensure efficacy to our ministry and to our ability to advocate on the school’s behalf. Please help us update your profile on Gradelink by completing your child’s census information. Return the forms to your child’s homeroom teacher by Thursday September 25th. Thank you for your cooperation.
One of the most beloved traditions at St. Cyril is finally here, our Italian Dinner Dance! This incredible community event brings together families, friends, and faculty for an unforgettable evening of food, fun, and fellowship. Our amazing parent team has been hard at work preparing the delicious dinner, and the highlight of the night will be watching your children shine on stage with the dances they’ve been rehearsing with Miss April. This is truly one of the most joyful events of the year, a chance to celebrate the heart of our community, make memories together, and enjoy an evening filled with laughter and connection. Tickets are still on sale, but time is running out! Don’t miss your chance to be part of this special night. Today is the last day to purchase dinner tickets, so click here for details. We can’t wait to see you there!
We are thrilled to announce that our new After Care Program, facilitated by the Boys & Girls Club of Burbank and Greater East Valley, officially begins this week! This exciting partnership will provide our students with enriching opportunities after school in a safe and supportive environment. Reminder: New Morning and Afternoon Drop Off
To help ensure the safety of our community is prioritized, we will minimize the amount of time the campus is open. This means that morning drop off procedures will take place in the Ventura parking lot. Cars will pull in the entrance gate from Ventura Blvd and drive around to drop their children off at the walk in gate near the security booth. The security guard will be standing there to help facilitate this change. If you would like to park and walk your child onto campus in the morning, please feel free to park in the Ventura lot and walk with care to the walk on gate.
In the afternoon, the gate will now open at 2:45pm and close at 3:10pm. If you are not able to enter the driveway due to a backup of cars onto Ventura Blvd., please be patient and drive around the block until the gates open and traffic on campus moves.
Please note these changes.

Garden Club is back this Fall! If you have a PreSchool-2nd Grade child who loves gardening and plants, come and join our Garden Club. For this 6-week, 45-minute session, your child will learn about soil, above ground planters, propagation, succulents, and up-cycling used household containers for planting purposes. Group size is limited to 12 children.
Garden Club parent volunteers will collect your children from their teachers after school. Children will eat lunch and will then garden from 1:15-2:00 pm. If your child attends after school care, parent volunteers will sign them in at 2:00 pm.
We are looking for two parent volunteers to assist our junior gardeners, help with sign in/out, take pictures, and with parent communications. This is a great way to earn your required volunteer hours! Your child does not need to be in the Garden Club to be a volunteer. Volunteers must be VIRTUS trained and fingerprinted.
To sign up your child for Garden Club or to volunteer, text Colleen Chretin at (818) 522-7404.
Snapshots Around Campus
Celebrating First Grade’s Artist of the Month: Frida Kahlo
September 15, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
This past week, our campus was alive with energy, both inside and outside the classroom. On Tuesday, our 8th graders stepped back for their fall retreat, a special time to reflect, strengthen their connections with God, and deepen their bonds with one another. Meanwhile, our younger grades entered the Science Lab to begin their STEAM investigations, embracing the role of budding engineers. In 7th grade, students brought history to life by building aqueducts to complement their studies of Ancient Roman innovations. Beyond the classroom, our student athletes are in the midst of spirited competition, demonstrating teamwork and school pride. At the same time, our 8th graders are taking important steps toward their future, busy researching and visiting high schools as they begin the application process for the next chapter in their educational journey. None of these moments could happen without the incredible care of our faculty and staff and the love and support of our families, through encouragement, carpools, and the many small but powerful ways you show up for our students and community every day.
Save the date for our beloved Italian Dinner Dance, that is right around the corner, Friday, September 26th, you won’t want to miss it! This treasured St. Cyril tradition is an evening where families and friends come together to celebrate the heart of our school community. We are looking forward to the delicious food prepared by our incredible parent team, and the highlight of the night will be our students lighting up the stage with their class dances they are already practicing with Miss April. It’s always one of the most memorable, fun filled community events of the year! Click here for more information. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
As we look to a new week, we also recall that the past two weeks have brought us many challenging and often difficult news stories to process, both for our students and for us as adults. Yet even amid all that, we are reminded of the blessings all around us, the gift of community, the joy of our students, and the steady presence of faith and hope. It is in moments like these that gratitude becomes even more important, helping us to center ourselves on what truly matters. We are so thankful for everything you do each day to make our community such a special place.
Yours in faith and community,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team
Mrs. Cohen, Mr. Ferris & Mrs, Lopez

The Student Council will be collecting donations during our Peanut Butter Drive from September 15th - 30th. Every student who donates will earn one raffle ticket per jar of peanut butter and will be entered into a raffle to win a Cheesecake Factory gift card!
Let’s help the needy in our community and take action today! Our collection starts next week, so don’t forget to bring in your jars of peanut butter. Student Council members will be out at morning drop off to collect your donations. Thank you for your support.
Sports:
The girls Volleyball team played in the 2nd Annual St. Charles Volleyball Tournament last Wednesday and Friday. Our girls didn’t do so well in the tournament but they received plenty of live practice. It turned out to be a big help.
On Sunday, the girls woke up early and participated in the Cantwell - Sacred Heart Volleyball Tournament in Montebello. We played so much better and the girls won their first game of the season. They now have eight games under their belt going into a busy week of play.
Please come out and CHEER the team on as both games this week will be at home in the School Hall.

In 7th Grade History, the students have been studying Rome, focusing on the rich legacy of the Roman Empire. Students learned about Roman art, architecture, and engineering, as well as language, writing, philosophy, and law that left a lasting influence throughout Western culture. The class engaged in an aqueduct STEM challenge. This project will focused on helping the students better understand the principles of engineering, design, and problem-solving that made these ancient structures so effective, while also giving them hands-on experience in applying STEM concepts to real-world challenges.
This week students entered the STEAM lab as engineers! Working together, students built towers using only string and rubber bands to move the cups. By the end of the class we had many tall towers and a classroom full of architects and engineers!
Kindergarten had their first day in the science lab! They learned team work and communication skills, along with fine tuning some fine and gross motor skills! We can’t wait to see what’s in store next week!

Dear St. Cyril Families,
Happy Monday! We hope you enjoyed the beautiful sunshine this past weekend. As we look ahead to the week, we’re excited for some cooler temperatures.
Last week, our students looked wonderful in their formal uniforms as they posed for school pictures. If your child missed picture day, the make-up day is this Tuesday. Please be sure your student wears their formal uniform (green polo) for their photo.
This past Friday, our Jr. High students attended Eucharistic Adoration in the church, a special time of prayer and reflection while the Blessed Sacrament is placed in the monstrance on the altar. Our students spent quiet time reflecting on God’s presence in a thoughtful and personal way. Thank you, Mrs. Moffat, for preparing our students for this sacred moment
This Tuesday, our 8th graders will participate in their 8th Grade Retreat, spending the first half of the day stepping away from their regular school routine. The retreat is a chance to pause, reflect, and draw closer to God. It is a way to take time for prayer, conversation, and personal growth outside the busyness of daily school life. We pray this experience will be both meaningful and memorable as they continue their journey of faith and leadership this year.
Please be sure to check the school calendar and take note of the important dates listed below. One event you won’t want to miss is our Italian Dinner Dance on September 26th, one of St. Cyril’s most cherished traditions! This amazing evening brings together friends and families to celebrate the heart of our school community. We always look forward to the delicious food prepared by our dedicated parent team, and the highlight of the evening is watching our students light up the night with the lively dances they’ve been working on with Miss April. This is an event you will not want to miss. Tickets are on sale now. Click here for more information. We look forward to seeing everyone there!
Here’s to a wonderful upcoming week!
Yours in faith and community,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team

September 2, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
What a positive and productive first full week of school we had! The students are quickly acclimating to their class schedules, beginning their elective classes, and forming new friendships that will grow throughout the year. Our opening school Mass was a beautiful celebration of community and faith. Thank you to our 8th graders for being such strong leaders, and to Mr. O and Mrs. Moffet for preparing the students so thoughtfully for Mass. We are also deeply appreciative of all our families who joined us in prayer and support.
Congratulations, SCJ on achieving a 95% attendance school wide since our 1st day of school. The outcome is noticeable in the classrooms - morning routines are smoother, curriculum time is maximed, and the first two weeks of school were an easier transition than ever before. Acclimating back to school and classroom routine was came with ease and teachers were able to focus on curriculum right away.
We also celebrated a meaningful Installation Service for our 2025–2026 Student Council. Thank you, Mrs. Clark, for your preparation and guidance in making this ceremony so special. We look forward to all the wonderful events and leadership this new group of students will bring to our school community. We are grateful for their dedication to St. Cyril and their willingness to serve.
We would like to share some important updates regarding Spirit Wear and what is permitted to be worn at school. Our school colors are green and gold, and we are in the process of phasing out all other colors with the St. Cyril name as we close down our Sideline Spirit Wear online store. We know, however, that many families recently purchased blue hoodies from our on-campus Spirit Wear sale. To support a smooth transition, students may continue to wear those specific blue hoodies (see photos below) on any day except formal uniform days this year as we phase them out.
In addition, the officially approved green Spirit Wear t-shirt (already purchased by many of you) may be worn on our Tuesday Spirit Wear days along with the grey ones below that were sold at the Spirit Wear sale this year. Sports team hoodies may only be worn on Tuesdays as well. All other hoodies jackets that are permitted, especially on Formal Uniform days, may only be purchased through the Tommy Hilfiger school website.
We understand that transitions can be challenging. As we move back toward a consistent look that reflects our school colors and SCJ brand, we know this will require some adjustments at home. We truly appreciate your patience and cooperation as we streamline our Spirit Wear guidelines, particularly for Tuesdays, our Spirit Wear day.
Lastly, as we settle into the school year, please review the 2025-2026 parent student handbook http://handbook.la-archdiocese.org/schools/06800 paying close attention to the dress code listed there. It’s important that all students adhere to these guidelines. Quick reminder that sweatpants are only allowed from November 1st through the return from Easter Break. For safety reasons, students are only permitted to wear athletic shoes—Uggs, Crocs, and sandals are not allowed for their safety during play. And Spirit Wear can only be worn on Tuesdays. Remember that skirts should be no shorter than 3” above the knee.
Please make sure to sign this form acknowledging reading the handbook. https://forms.gle/weLhVEKedDGiExej8
Thank you for your continued support in helping us build pride and unity through our school identity.
Here’s to a wonderful upcoming week!
Warm regards,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team

Snapshots Around Campus
August 25, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
What an incredible start to the school year we had last week! Our campus quickly came alive as students filled the classrooms with energy, curiosity, and joy. Those blank walls you may have noticed at Orientation are already decorated with first-day projects, and the sound of students’ laughter and chatter at recess has been the best kind of music to our ears.
On Thursday, our first day of school, we gathered together in the Outdoor Classroom where our Student Council led the first morning prayer and announcements of the year. Fr. Danny then blessed each of the students’ backpacks, offering a special prayer for a year filled with growth, success, and joy. It was a beautiful way to set the tone for all that lies ahead.
We are thrilled to be back in the rhythm of school life and even more excited to share with you our first Monday Family Letter of the 2025–2026 school year. For our new families, this weekly letter is your go-to resource for updates on upcoming events, school news, and highlights from around campus. Don’t forget to check the “Snapshots Around Campus” section at the bottom, where you’ll get a glimpse into the day-to-day buzz and happenings that make our community so special.
We are also grateful for your support and cooperation with our updated school procedures as we transition into the year. A a few reminders:
The warning bell for morning lineup rings at 7:45 AM, and students should line up in their class’s designated area to head to their classrooms with their teachers. Arriving between 7:55am -8:25am is considered tardy.
Afternoon pick-up ran smoothly last week, and we appreciate your efforts! A quick reminder: after giving your child's name to Mrs. Lopez, please split into two lines—Jr. High cars on the right closest to the convent and K-5 cars closest to the grass. If you have children in both Jr. High and lower grades, please use the Jr. High lane for pick-up.
Morning and Aftercare is now held in the bungalow. If you drop your student off before 7:30am, please direct them to the bungalow. That is also where you can pick up your student from aftercare. All students dropped off before 7:30 must go to morning care as yard supervision doesn’t begin until 7:30am. This also goes for Jr. High students as they should not be hanging out at their lockers before 7:30am.
Please note that food services like Uber Eats or DoorDash are not allowed for lunch deliveries. Only parents may drop off food in the office for their students. We encourage you to check out and order from our new hot lunch company.
As we settle into the school year, please review the 2025-2026 parent student handbook http://handbook.la-archdiocese.org/schools/06800 paying close attention to the dress code listed there. It’s important that all students adhere to these guidelines. Quick reminder that sweatpants are only allowed from November 19th (first day of trim through the return from Easter Break. For safety reasons, students are only permitted to wear athletic shoes—Uggs, Crocs, and sandals are not allowed for their safety during play. And Spirit Wear can only be worn on Tuesdays. Remember that skirts should be no shorter than 3” above the knee. https://forms.gle/weLhVEKedDGiExej8
Uniform reminder: the only blue skirts that may be worn to school must have been purchased from Dennis Uniform or used uniform sales. No other blue skirts should be worn.
Blue hoodies purchased from official school spirit wear sale may be worn currently every day except formal uniform days.
Next Friday, we will celebrate our first all-school Mass at noon. The Mass will be led by our 8th graders, and following Mass, we will hold the installation of our Student Council members. Please remember that formal uniform is required for all students on Mass days.
Next week, we will also begin our fall STAR Testing window.
A quick reminder: School Pictures are scheduled for Tuesday, September 2nd. Students should wear their formal uniform on picture day — the green polo for all students and the 8th grade polo for our 8th graders. Since this falls on the day we return from the Labor Day weekend, please mark your calendars to ensure everyone comes prepared.
Thank you again for the incredible support you’ve shown as we kick off this new school year. We are excited for all the learning, growth, and friendships that will happen in the months ahead.
Warm regards,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team
Mrs. Cohen, Mr. Ferris & Mrs, Lopez

Morning and After School Care Procedures
Please note that we have moved the location of morning and after care to the Bungalow next to the Art room. If you drop your child off before 7:30am, please either walk them to the bungalow room and sign them in or if students are being dropped off, remind them they need to drop off their backpacks on the grass where they line up or by their lockers and check in with morning care until 7:30am when there is yard supervision. This is for their safety. No students should be in the grass area or by their lockers unsupervised.
For After Care pick up, all parents should come in through the Ventura parking lot gate. No one will be available to open office doors once Mrs. Blake and Mrs. Austria leave. Parents can be let in either using the parent code at the gate or security will open the gate for them.
Thank you in advance for following these procedures for Morning and After Care at school.
School Lunches
School hot lunch is serviced by Bailee’s Plate, a local chef who focuses on quality ingredients and nutrition. Lunch orders can be done through MealManage, an app that allows parents to meal plan in advance. By August 1st, all SCJ parents should receive an ordering link. If you have not, the help desk contact is Bo Milkov (bo@baileesplate.com) at (310) 279-3786. Provide the help desk with the parent's email, phone number, child's name & grade, school name. In an effort to minimize unnecessary access into the school, lunch drop offs can only be done by parents or guardians. Food service deliveries such as UberEats, GrubHub, DoorDash, etc are not allowed. This should alleviate the amount of unfamiliar individuals trying to gain access to the school, unwanted long-term parking by multiple drivers, and class disruption when deliveries are late. Bailee’s Plate can provide emergency lunches if necessary through the MealManage account. (https://www.mealmanage.com/) (https://baileesplate.com/)

Snapshots Around Campus
August 18, 2025
Dear St. Cyril Families,
We are so excited to greet you all on campus this week! The classrooms look amazing—floors are polished, walls are freshly painted, and bulletin boards are bursting with creativity, just waiting for your students’ schoolwork to be pinned up.
Over the past two weeks, our dedicated faculty and staff have been busy preparing for the year ahead. We began with our annual Faculty Retreat at the Holy Spirit Retreat Center, beautifully led by the one and only Ms. Fab. It was a faith-filled day of reflection, planning, and prayer together. In addition, our teachers engaged in outstanding professional development over the past two weeks:
A day with Dr. Tammy Van Fleet, who shared meaningful and creative ways to integrate social-emotional learning into our school days.
Differentiated Classroom with Catapult Learning.
First Aide & CPR training
C3 Conference (Catholic Communication Collaboration), an umbrella for education and ministry technology efforts throughout the Archdiocese.
Social Studies Curriculum from Savvas Learning Co.
And, in between all the learning, our team enjoyed a hands-on afternoon with alumni parent Tanya Kearsley of Sparrow LA, creating beautiful wreaths now hanging throughout our classrooms and learning spaces.
We would also like to thank everyone who joined us on Saturday for our beautiful Welcome Back Mass an Ice Cream Social. A special thank-you goes to the Foundation for St. Cyril School for sponsoring the social and to the Ferris Family for decorating the Hall so festively.
Looking ahead, we can’t wait to see everyone on Wednesday, August 20th, for our school orientations. Please see the timeline for the afternoon in the body of this newsletter. Our first day of school will be Thursday, August 21st, and we invite all families to join us for the annual Blessing of the Backpacks with Fr. Danny during morning announcements in the Outdoor Classroom.
We are truly excited for the 2025–2026 school year. It will be a year full of learning and adventure, creativity and exploration. We can’t wait to see you all on Wednesday!
With excitement and gratitude,
Mrs. Pugliese and the Leadership Team

Athletics
Involvement in sports, particularly as a member of a sports team, is an integral way for youth to develop psychosocially and help form their social identity. Sports participation helps athletes develop self-esteem, correlates positively with overall mental health (American Academy of Pediatrics, July 2023). Regardless of your child’s athletic abilities or competitive level, we encourage all students to get involved, learn a new sport, build friendships outside of class! At that time, we will give an introduction to the program, discuss basic criminal and constitutional law principles, and walk through how a trial works. The next practice will be on August 17 at the same time – 4-6 p.m. Regular practices will start the first Friday of the week school starts, August 22nd at 1:15-2:30 pm. All parents are welcome to attend the first and/or second practice on August 10 or 17 to see what Mock Trial is all about and ask questions. At the August 10, 2025 meeting we want to address parent questions and issues. So, we are asking parents to at least plan on attending the August 10, 2025 meeting from 5:30-6:00.

Meet our Faculty and Staff
Mrs. Pugliese, Principal
This is Mrs. Pugliese’s 14th year at St. Cyril and 22nd year in education.
Having been a Kindergarten teacher for majority of her teaching career, choosing just one book out of so many incredible books was not easy. One of her most favorite books is Duck Rabbit by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Tom Lichtenheld. It is a book, a visual puzzle, and a dialogue all rolled into one! Duck Rabbit is a funny and clever way of teaching kids about perspective, different points of view and right vs. wrong. Each time a student picks up this book, it is as if they are reading a totally different book than last time.
Mrs. Cohen, Leadership Team and Jr. High Math and History Teacher
Mrs. Cohen is excited to welcome you to a new school year! This will be her 14th year teaching at St. Cyril, where she serves as the Junior High Chair and teaches both math and history to our amazing Jr. High students. While she now has two adult children of her own, she still vividly remembers snuggling up to read one of her family’s all-time favorites—Giraffes Can’t Dance—when they were little.
There’s just something about a rhythm-challenged giraffe finding his groove that still sticks with Mrs. Cohen. Maybe it’s the dancing warthogs, maybe it’s Gerald’s wobbly knees—or maybe it’s the reminder that everyone shines in their own time and in their own way. As a teacher, that message continues to resonate: Mrs.Cohen believes every student can succeed when given the right music, the right encouragement, and a little room to dance.
Mrs. Moffat, Religion Teacher/Religion Coordinator
This will be Mrs. Moffat’s first full year teaching at St. Cyril. She became part of the SCJ faculty last year, assisting Ms. Fab and then taking grades 4, 5 and 6 as her own. However, she has been part of the St. Cyril community for 13 years when her older son started Kindergarten. This year, her younger son will be in 8th grade. A lifelong Catholic, Mrs. Moffat is so excited to be part of this amazing community as both a parent and now a teacher!
One special book that Mrs. Moffat loves is Ten in the Bed by Penny Dale. She read this book to both her boys and they always laughed so hard when the little one’s beloved stuffed animals fell out of the bed one by one. In the end, they all jump back into bed and cozy up for a good night’s sleep. Mrs. Moffat likes this book because not only does it teach you to learn how to count, but it also makes you feel warm and comfortable surrounded by the things you love.
Mrs.Ceciliane 5th grade teacher
Mrs.Ceciliane is excited to begin her 8th year at St.Cyril, where she first joined the community 7 years ago as Ms.Ramos. Throughout her time at the school she has grown personally and professionally; earning a bachelors and masters degree, getting married, and growing her family. These milestones give her a deeper connection to the school alongside her experience from teaching 5th grade, 6th grade math, and teaching Academic Decathlon and yearbook. She brings a well-rounded understanding of the academic and extracurricular programs that help students thrive. Beyond the classroom she is also a teacher mom with her oldest son who will be in the 8th grade, and youngest in pre-k. This gives her a unique heartfelt perspective as both, which helps her passion of building a nurturing environment where students feel seen and supported, but are also encouraged to grow.
One of her favorite childhood books, which she finds meaningful as a mother of two boys, is “No, David” by David Shannon. The story captures the energy and curiosity of childhood while balancing the importance of structure with the reassurance of unconditional love. It reflects a truth she holds dear: that while children may test boundaries, they deserve patience, understanding, and to know they are loved, always. Mrs.Ceciliane strives to foster the same compassionate spirit in the classroom. She believes everyone should celebrate the messy, noisy and lovable reality of being a child.
Mr. Miller, 6th-grade homeroom and ELA teacher
Mr. Miller is starting his 5th year at St. Cyril and his 10th teaching 6th-8th grade in the Archdiocese. Before becoming a teacher, he worked for the Los Angeles Times, co-founded the poetry book publisher Moon Tide Press, and wrote several books of his own. At St. Cyril, he oversees the annual spring anthology, edits the SCJ Times magazine, and organizes the Kushim Club visiting author program.
One of Mr. Miller’s favorite childhood books is Crockett Johnson’s Harold and the Purple Crayon, in which the title character — “after thinking it over for some time” — goes for a moonlight walk and constructs a world around him with his mystical crayon. The story is an intriguing mix of fantasy and logic, as Harold creates outlandish dilemmas for himself but then uses real-world reason to get out of them. We can learn from his adventures that imagination and reality are equally key parts of a child’s psyche — and ELA class, of course, is about celebrating both of them.
Mrs. Clark, Learning Specialist
Although this is Mrs. Clark’s 5th year teaching at St. Cyril, she has been blessed to be a part of the SCJ community for over 40 years as a parishioner, student, school parent, and educator. With 20 years of teaching experience, Mrs. Clark has taught at the elementary, middle, and high school levels, including working with students who have social, emotional, and learning differences. In her role as the Learning Specialist, Mrs. Clark is a collaborative partner and advocate, working with students, teachers, and parents to support each child’s unique learning journey. In addition to helping with advancement and alumni relations, Mrs. Clark also serves as the Student Council moderator, an Academic Decathlon coach, and will be teaching 6th Math and 7th History this year.
Mrs. Clark’s favorite book as a child was The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. This book tells a poignant story about the unconditional love between a tree and a boy. As the boy grows older, he visits the tree less and less, but returns in times of need. When he does, the tree selflessly offers parts of itself to help the boy, asking nothing in return. The tree loves the boy so deeply that it gives everything it has to make him happy, and in doing so, the tree finds happiness too. The story teaches the value of kindness, generosity, and empathy, and it illustrates how love is shown not just with words, but through actions as well. As a teacher dedicated to inclusivity, Mrs. Clark firmly believes that embracing diversity and fostering a welcoming environment is reflected in how every member of our school community treats one another daily, both inside and beyond the classroom.
Mrs. Lopez 3rd Grade Teacher and Primary Grade Chair
Mrs. Lopez is entering her fifth year at SCJ, bringing with her over 25 years of experience in both public and private education. She dedicated 18 of those years to teaching second grade and is now beginning her third year in third grade and as the Primary Grade Chair. Her enduring passion for teaching and her unwavering commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of her students continue to inspire her each new school year.
This year also brings exciting changes for her family. Her oldest son will be moving out to complete the final two years of his college career, and her daughter will be starting community college, where she will also be playing collegiate soccer. Mrs. Lopez is filled with excitement and looks forward to the many new adventures ahead, both personally and professionally.
One of Mrs. Lopez’ favorite children’s books is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. She has been reading this powerful story to her students since its publication in 2012. In 2017, she had the unique opportunity to take over 80 of her former second-grade students and their families to see the film adaptation in theaters, an experience she considers one of the most memorable moments of her teaching career.
Mrs. Lopez returns to Wonder year after year because of its profound message. The novel follows August Pullman, a young boy with a facial difference, as he navigates the challenges of attending school for the first time. Through Auggie’s journey, students learn the importance of empathy, kindness, and acceptance. The story, told through multiple perspectives, helps children understand how different people experience the world and encourages them to look beyond appearances, embrace differences, and stand up for what is right. Wonder is not only relatable but also a valuable tool for fostering compassion and inclusivity in the classroom.
Mrs. Mika - 2nd Grade Teacher and Reading Specialist
Mrs. Mika recently joined the St. Cyril faculty last year, and has previously taught English at the college level, and to non-native speakers from around the world. While living in China, she discovered the joy of teaching early elementary students from K-8. She worked as a Reading Specialist for Burbank Unified School District and is passionate about sharing her skillset with the students at St. Cyril to find joy in reading. She is thrilled to continue teaching second grade, where students see the world through new eyes as they pivot from learning to read, to reading to learn!
Her favorite storybook is Du Iz Tak, by Carson Ellis. This whimsical, beautifully illustrated story explores the cycle of life from the perspective of a group of bugs. Together, they experience the joy of discovery, the excitement of growth, as well as the sadness and sense of hope that often accompanies change. The best part? This story is written in bug language, so readers quickly realize, just like the characters, they too are capable of achieving things they never imagined!
Ms. Kingsbury- 1st Grade Teacher
Ms. Kingsbury is entering her fourth year as a member of the SCJ team and is currently the First Grade Teacher. She has taught all over the San Fernando Valley as a tutor, art teacher, and STEM camp instructor. With a bachelor’s degree in the Arts, Ms. K aims to make First Grade a creative, multimodal, and fun learning experience for each of her students. Ms. K is thrilled to welcome the new class of first graders and be a part of their educational journey to becoming lifelong learners!
Ms. K’s favorite childhood book is Olivia by Ian Falconer. This endearing story follows Olivia, a creative and energetic pig. Olivia has a passion for fashion and is an art lover. With her go-getter personality, this little pig is willing to try new things and ponder the world around her. This story still resonates with Ms. K today, and it serves as an example to stay curious about the world and let your unique personality shine!
Mr. Ferris 4th Grade Teacher and Intermediary Chair
Mr. Ferris is thrilled to begin his fifth year at St. Cyril and his tenth year in education. His journey in teaching began in physical education and has since grown to include middle school religion and literature, fourth grade, and leadership as the intermediary chair. Over the years, he has also taken on a variety of roles, including coaching the Academic Decathlon team. Recently, Mr. Ferris completed his master’s degree, further deepening his commitment to lifelong learning. He brings a special passion for teaching writing and is dedicated to helping students grow not only academically, but also emotionally and personally. He is excited for another meaningful year of learning and growth at St. Cyril.
One of his favorite storybooks is The Little Blue Truck. It’s a heartwarming tale that teaches the importance of kindness, teamwork, and humility. These are values Mr. Ferris believes are just as important in the classroom as they are in life. With its rhythmic language, cheerful animal sounds, and positive message, the story captures young readers’ attention while encouraging them to treat others with respect and lend a helping hand. Like the Little Blue Truck, Mr. Ferris believes that being kind, consistent, and supportive makes the biggest difference.
Ms. April - Jr. High Theatre Teacher
This will be Ms. April’s second year at St. Cyril. She has an extensive background in theatre and dance. Her career on stage began as a ballerina and continued as an actress performing on stage in San Francisco and Los Angeles. April is a member of Screen Actors Guild and The Actors Studio. She has credits in television, film and commercials. Last year the St. Cyril's after-school theatre program performed Thumbelina, The Elves and the Shoemaker and The Wizard of Oz Jr. Musical.
Ms. April's favorite book she would read to her children every night is “Goodnight Moon” by Margaret Wise Brown. The book is a simple story of acknowledging what is around you and saying goodnight. Ms. April believes that ritual brings comfort, and saying goodnight to your family and surroundings is a gracious, and beautiful way to end the day.
Ms. Jenkins - Science Teacher
This will be Ms.Jenkins’ second year teaching K-8 science at St. Cyril. Ms.Jenkins is the current 7th grade homeroom teacher, middle school science teacher, and academic decathlon coach. Prior to joining St.Cyril, Ms.Jenkins studied Mathematics-Computer Science and Art in her undergraduate studies at UCSD. She is currently working towards a masters in Transformative Education with a focus in Disabilities Studies and Inclusive Education at Loyola Marymount University. She has taught science in different contexts, from private tutoring, to hands-on science summer camps, to engineering labs at St. Cyril. She loves combining science and art to foster curiosity and creativity in her classroom.
One of Ms. Jenkins’ favourite childhood books is The Way Things Work by David Maculay. This book was originally her father’s and passed down to her when she was young. The book details how different inventions work, with help from some silly characters- Mammoths! Growing up Ms.Jenkins loved laughing at the mammoths trying to push and pull levers, build airplanes from detailed schematics, even showing how a giant videotape player worked. She maybe liked the stories too much, as the next day her own VHS was taken apart to “see how it worked”. Ms. Jenkins likes this book as it shows how art, science, and silliness can combine to explain how the world around us works. How can you not be curious when watching mini mammoths build a VHS? While she does recommend the book, she does not recommend taking apart your own technology, just wait for science class to do that!
Mr. Orlanes - Music Teacher
This will be Mr. Orlanes’ 4th year at St. Cyril of Jerusalem teaching music to PreSchool-8th and his 6th year in music education overall. Mr. O is excited to start teaching instruments and choir again soon as well as introducing the joy of music and dance to our youngest learners. He is also excited to start working on all the music concerts and events that involve our entire school that give our talented students the chance to share the gift of music with our school and parish community.
One of Mr. O’s favorite books has to be The Cat in the Hat. He has a deep appreciation for this book because it was one of the first book to movie films he ever watched. In addition to his love for actual cats, Mr. Orlanes admires the Cat in the Hat story because of its lessons on how to have fun but also holding yourself accountable. It is Mr. O’s hope, just like the Cat, that he will be able to teach his students the same lessons of personal responsibility but also how to have fun in every situation we encounter this school year.
Mrs. Marcia Olgin PK Teacher and PK Co-Director
Mrs. Olgin will be starting her 26th year at St. Cyril’s School. She has a love of teaching some of the smallest students on campus. Love of learning and love of coming to school is her main goal for her incoming students. Her youngest son will be graduating 8th grade this year and she is proud to be a parent as well as an educator at SCJ.
Her favorite book is Clever Jack Takes the Cake. She first read this book when her oldest child was in 1st grade and she was asked to be the mystery reader for the class. This book emphasizes themes of resourcefulness and perseverance.
It’s a must read!
Ms. Jennifer Condon - Kindergarten
Ms. Condon is entering her fourth year as the Kindergarten teacher at St. Cyril, where she is passionate about creating a nurturing and engaging learning environment for young children. She loves working with Kindergarteners because of their boundless curiosity, growing independence, and the joy they bring to each day. Her classroom is a place where creativity, kindness, and exploration are encouraged and celebrated.
One of Ms. Condon’s favorite ways to inspire her students is through literature—especially The Magic Tree House series. Her favorite book in the series, Mummies in the Morning, takes readers on an exciting journey through ancient Egypt with siblings Jack and Annie. This story not only taps into her love for history, but also becomes a powerful tool in her classroom. As Jack and Annie face unfamiliar situations, ask questions, and rely on each other to solve problems, Ms. Condon’s students see themselves reflected in those same experiences as they grow throughout the year.
She often tells her class that just like Jack and Annie, Kindergarten is a big adventure. At the start of the year, students are full of wonder and sometimes a little unsure—just like Jack. But with time, guidance, and support, they grow more confident and curious—just like Annie. Together, they learn to take risks, ask questions, and discover new things every day.
For Ms. Condon, books like Mummies in the Morning are more than just stories—they're mirrors and maps for her students, helping them understand the world around them and their place in it. She is proud to be part of the St. Cyril community and is excited for another magical year of learning, laughter, and growth with her Kindergarteners.
Mrs. Rinker - Preschool Teacher
This is Mrs. Rinker’s 2nd year as a Preschool Teacher at St. Cyril and her 8th year as a parent here, with her son entering 6th grade and her daughter entering 4th grade. She loves being a Preschool Teacher and working with the young students and helping them learn and explore new topics.
One of the books she enjoyed reading to her children and now to her students is Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin. She enjoys reading this book because it introduces kids to math, the kids love singing and reading along and it has a nice message to keep positive even when things don’t go our way. It is a fun read for everyone.
Coach Dan Rios- This will be my 4th year here at SCJ as Athletic Director and P.E. Teacher. I’m very excited about this year, as I begin my 45th year of teaching in the Archdiocese. I’m a former High School Football and Baseball coach, former Athletic Director of the year (2018) and most recently the Valley Area Rep. for the CYO. I have been a part of several CYO Championship teams. I enjoy playing Softball and going to Car Shows. I am also a Parts Specialist for AutoZone.
I’m not much of a reader but I tend to lean on the Dr. Seuss series of books. My favorite is The Grinch but I also love Green Eggs and Ham
Señorita Ramos- Spanish teacher & Aide
This will be Señorita Ramos 2nd year as a Spanish teacher here at St. Cyril and her 10th year in education. Señorita Ramos is committed to creating a supportive and engaging classroom environment, where all students feel encouraged to participate and grow. Along the way, students will explore the rich and diverse cultures of the Spanish-speaking world — learning about traditions, music, food, and customs that make language learning more meaningful.
One of her favorite books is Too Many Tamales because it beautifully captures the warmth and chaos of family life, especially during the holidays. It’s more than just a funny story it shows how traditions, even when things go wrong, bring people closer together. The book also celebrates Latino culture in a way that’s both relatable and heartfelt, reminding us that mistakes are part of growing up, and love and forgiveness are what truly matter.
Mrs. Collins joined the SCJ staff five years ago as a teacher's aid and just completed her first year as librarian. As an avid reader with extensive experience in performance, and television writing, Mrs. Collins brings a unique background that blends strong communication skills, and creativity to the role of school librarian. She understands the value of organization, resourcefulness, and imagination in helping students develop not only research and literacy skills but also a lifelong love of reading. She relishes the challenge of making the library a stimulating yet uncomplicated hub away from all the digital influences that children face today.
A Bad Case of Stripes, by David Shannon, is one of Mrs.Collins’s favorite books for young students. Camilla, the main character, is extremely nervous to attend the first day of school. While trying to find the right outfit to wear, she whips herself into a frenzy and breaks out in a bad case of stripes. The kids at school laugh at her as her skin continues to change patterns throughout the day, influenced by what is going on around her. Finally, she learns to be herself and not worry about what others think. The message in this book promotes the idea that we are all unique and special in our own way. It emphasizes the importance of remaining true to one's self no matter what..
Mrs. Prado - Asst. Learning Specialist
This is Mrs. Prado’s 3rd year as a member St. Cyril faculty. She is a proud SCJ graduate, proud mom of four SCJ students. Being part of a faith and family centered community is very important to her. Helping others has always been a passion for her, especially children. She enjoys creating a safe, fun and happy place for the children.
As a child Mrs. Prado’s favorite book was Clifford the Big Red Dog by Norman Bridwell. The story is about a little girl named Emily who is given a tiny red dog for christmas. Everyone believed he would be small and sick but Emily loved, cared for and believed Clifford would grow to be a big strong dog. The message of the story is that magic is all around us, with some love, care and faith anything is possible.
Ms. Valenzuela - Instructional Aid and Afterschool Coordinator
After 11 years of being a Physical Education Instructor, Ms. Valenzuela is transitioning from teaching at PUC Schools to assisting at St. Cyril. With a background of teaching a diversity of young minds, Ms. Valenzuela is eager to meet the young and intelligent minds of St. Cyril. She is happy to assist wherever her talents deem necessary.
Ms. Valenzuela’s favorite childhood book is: The Rainbow Fish. The story of the Rainbow Fish is about a beautiful fish with iridescent scales, who refuses to share his scales because is so proud of how unique and shimmery he looks. As a result, the Rainbow fish is found alone. Once he starts to share his scales he learns that joy comes from befriending other fish as he distributes his scales. The message is that we can share our talents no matter how proud we are. Others will find joy in our beauty and accomplishments too.

Inquiry Based - How to solve the big question?
Thank you to the Foundation for St. Cyril School for sponsoring the Welcome Back Ice Cream Social
Dear St. Cyril Families,
We hope this message finds you soaking up the final days of summer and enjoying time with family and friends. Here at St. Cyril, we’re eagerly counting down the days—just 30!—until we welcome our students back for another joyful First Day of School.
This year, we’re especially excited to greet the Class of 2036 (Preschool!) along with all the new families joining our school community. While many of you have been enjoying a well-deserved break, our campus has been full of energy, hosting three summer camps, welcoming over 1,400 young campers, and giving dozens of tours to prospective families.
Behind the scenes, we’ve been busy getting ready for your child’s return—and we can’t wait to see our halls filled with curious minds and smiling faces once again. Below are a few important updates and reminders as we head into the new school year.
Upgrades around campus
There’s been quite a bit of improvements around campus this summer! Work has been done on the school roofs, classrooms are being updated, and the front office restrooms are being renovated.
New Curriculum
This year, our curriculum update focused on Religion. At the very core, learning at St. Cyril rooted Catholic Faith, where children thrive spiritually, emotionally, socially and academically. The new religion curriculum (Loyola Press, Christ our Life ) reflects these sentiments. Written by the Sisters of Notre Dame, it helps teachers form students to pray, to love others, to live with a sense of morality, and hopefully to leave the Church and world better than they found it (Loyola Press, 2025). It is also aligned with the Assessment of Children Religious Education (ACRE), which is used to evaluate the effectiveness of their religious education programs in schools. The teachers and I are excited about this new curriculum and look forward to growing in faith with your children.
As we continue to strengthen our Social Studies program, we will remain committed to an inquiry-based, discovery-driven approach that encourages students to think critically, ask questions, and make meaningful connections to the world around them. This year, we will be introducing a new curriculum publisher that better aligns with our goals and enhances the learning experience, while still upholding the engaging, student-centered approach our program is known for. The curriculum is CA My World and the publisher is SAAVAS Learning Company. The curriculum provides a wide range of tools to support and enhance student learning. It offers a variety of ways to promote deeper thinking, strengthen vocabulary and has a high level of rigor while bringing content to life in a meaningful way.
Here is a list for the upcoming season:
Swim - Summer training begins mid-July, Season includes four meets September - November.

Mock Trial for Junior High
This year we are starting practice before the school year begins to prepare before the November competition downtown in the courthouse. The first meeting will be from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on August 10, 2025 at the School (exact classrooms TBD).
If interested in joining or coaching, please contact Jim Fitzgerald at jimfitz@fitzlegalconsult.com or at 213-507-4234.

We are blessed to have an active Parent Association who dedicate their time, talent and gifts to organize volunteers, raise funds, and become ambassadors for the school.
