History

St. Thomas College of Teacher Education has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1957, positioning it as a pioneering institution in the field of teacher education. The college's library, an integral part of its academic environment, has been operational since its inception. A significant milestone was reached in 1976, when the late Mar Sebastian Vayalil, the Founder Patron and first Bishop of Pala Diocese, inaugurated the current Library Building, providing a dedicated space for knowledge and learning.

The library's evolution continued in 2001, with the initiation of partial automation of its functions. Subsequently, in 2005, the addition of internet connectivity and browsing facilities further enhanced its offerings. The introduction of the M.Ed. Course brought about substantial changes to the library's structure. The college utilized Management Funds to modernize the infrastructure, including the incorporation of more computers, new furniture items, and improved lighting arrangements.

A notable shift occurred in 2012, when the library transitioned to new automation software CampusNet, streamlining various housekeeping operations. This step marked an important leap in the library's efficiency and effectiveness. The same year also witnessed the establishment of the Digital Library, a technological initiative that bolstered access to digital resources and further enriched the learning experience.

The library encountered challenges during the COVID lockdown, leading to disruptions in the library server's functionality. Consequently, a decision was made to transition to Koha 2021, a new library software that could better adapt to the evolving circumstances. In the year 2023, recognizing the growing demands for flexible and remote access, the library underwent a significant transformation. It shifted from being a digital library confined to the campus premises to embracing a cloud-based digital library model. This strategic shift enabled users to access resources and materials from anywhere with internet connectivity, aligning with the changing dynamics of information consumption and the need for seamless accessibility. This transition to a cloud-based infrastructure represents the library's commitment to staying current with technological advancements while ensuring that its valuable resources remain readily available to its users, regardless of physical location.
