What is School Counseling?

What Does a School Counselor Do?

School Counselors work closely with administration, teachers, and parents to support all students academically, emotionally, and socially so they can achieve their fullest potential in the classroom, and will be ready to successfully transition to life after high school.

The Role of a School Counselor

At St. Clair Secondary, my counseling role can be divided into three parts:

  • Career Counseling - Teach classroom lessons and meet with individuals or groups of students on career exploration and planning, goal setting, decision making, and administering/interpreting interest and skill inventories/assessments.
  • Academic Planning and Support - Assist students in choosing and planning appropriate and challenging coursework to achieve post high school goals. School Counselors can also help with study skills practice, homework tracking, or peer tutoring.
  • Personal and Social Support - Provide resources and support through conflicts and life obstacles. This can include conflict mediation and personal/group counseling.

My role is to help students have the best school experience possible. Please contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. For more information about School Counseling in general, please visit the website www.schoolcounselor.org.
