College/Career

It is never too early to start thinking about your future!  Now is the time for students to start exploring their interests, skills, and values.  The better you know yourself, the better you can choose a career you will enjoy.

DECIDING WHAT TO DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL?

High School students must eventually face the issue of what to do with their lives after high school.  For some, this is an exciting time with many possibilities.  Others may find it overwhelming and intimidating.  Goal setting, self-assessment, and exploring options with parents and caring adults can help make the planning less daunting.  School Counselor, Missy Hoscheit, is willing and ready to assist students with the process.  There are many helpful resources to be found online.  Students and/or parents are always invited to set up an individual appointment with Mrs. Hoscheit: call 507-245-3027 ext. 239 or email mhoscheit@stclaircyclones.org

It is important to get organized and start planning early for your options after high school.   The career development process can be meaningful and exciting if you invest the time needed to “know yourself” and align possible occupations with your “interests, skills and values”.  Utilizing your MCIS portfolio and all the resources available on the MCIS website (you started using this website in 9th grade with the counselor) can help with your planning.  If you have lost your MCIS username/password, please contact Mrs. Hoscheit.  Once you have selected a field of study and/or occupation, it is much easier to explore your options and determine if you need to attend college, for how long, and where.  It is now more important than ever to do your research and choose your “plan” carefully so you do not waste precious time or money preparing for the employment options that are the “best fit for you”!

If you want to apply for more schooling, you must realize that some colleges have early deadlines; and admissions requirements that may change from year to year.  Therefore, you are encouraged to begin researching your options early in your high school years and keep track of the information needed to achieve your goals.  If you are not sure what to do, or wonder if college is a good option for you, ask for help!  Attend college/career fairs, review school websites, visit campuses, research careers, and gather information from friends, parents, teachers, and counselors to help decide which college or career may be your best option.  There are also many free books about post-secondary options and financial aid available to you in the Counseling Office, please see Mrs. Hoscheit.
