The Family Educational Rights and Privacy (FERPA) Act of 1974 protects the privacy of student’s educational records, and impacts, on a daily basis, our work as faculty members and staff. Learn about what the law requires of us, including when a student’s written consent is required to disclose their educational records, the exceptions to the written consent requirement, the “must” and “mays” of FERPA, and other issues of concern to us all.


Presenters:

Matt Gravel, Dean of Academic Initiatives, has served as the College’s FERPA Officer since 2005, when he began a 7-year stint as the College’s Registrar. He earned an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BA in English from UMass Dartmouth.


Sean Pettis, Senior Director of Infrastructure and Security, joined STCC in April of 2021 and has over 28 years of IT experience. Sean holds a BS in Computer Science from Orlando College, is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), and is a member of the Massachusetts State University and Community College Higher Education Information Security Officers (HEISO) council.
