Dear Parents and Guardians,
Young children make incredible progress during each school year. This summer, we
encourage you to continue to read with your child, not only to prevent the “summer slide,” but
also to foster a lifelong love of reading. Research has shown that children learn to read by
reading, and the more children read the better readers they become. For summer reading,
students should read Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli, or Judy Moody and the Not Bummer
Summer by Meg McDonald. Fill out the graphic organizer attached for the story that you read.
Use that graphic organizer to write a summary of your story. Summaries should be at least 3-4
sentences long. Writing paper is attached to this packet.

In addition to summer reading, here is a list of skills on IXL your child can practice.
These skills will help your child review and retain skills from second grade. This practice is not
required. This is not meant to overwhelm or take away from the relaxation of summertime.
Below are some recommended skills from second grade. Listed are the three digit codes to
search the lessons on IXL.
Math:
Skip counting:
C.1 Skip counting by 2’s (LK2)
C.2 Skip counting by 5’s (VHG)
C.3 Skip counting by 10’s (5PY)
C.14 Counting forward and backwards by twos, fives, tens, and hundreds (HNG)
Addition two digits:
N.3 Add a multiple of 10 to a two-digit number (NPQ)
N.7 Add two-digit numbers vertically- sums to 100 (LZJ)
Subtraction two digits:
P.4 Subtract a multiple of 10 from two-digit numbers (2Q6)
P.6 Subtract two- digit numbers with regrouping (TWE)
Repeated Addition:
X.1 Count equal groups (LHS)
X.2 Identify repeated addition for equal groups (MQP)
Time:
DD.4: Read clocks and write times: hour and half hours (AQW)

In order to help your child be prepared for this wonderful year of learning, please purchase the
following supplies for September:
■ Three two pocket folders labeled: Home folder (green folder), Classwork folder, and
Test Folder
■ 3 Composition Notebook labeled: ELA, Writing, and Spelling
■ Two Erasers
■ A package of sharpened #2 pencils
■ A pencil sharpener
■ A box of crayons
■ A box of colored pencils
■ School scissors
■ A package of highlighters
■ Two Glue sticks
■ A pair of plug in headphones labeled with your child’s name
■ A plastic art box to hold the supplies
■ Clear contact paper to cover soft cover books (leave at home)
■ One Jumbo-Sized Book Sox for the hard-covered reading book
■ 1 box of markers
*These supplies will need to be restocked throughout the school year*
Please bring in:
■ One box of tissues
■ One container of Lysol or similar wipes
■ One roll of paper towels
