Raptor Monitoring at the State Parks

The CPW Volunteer Raptor Monitoring Program is a statewide, year-round program currently established at over 25 parks. We are looking for additional volunteers at many parks, except those along the Front Range. The majority of the parks on the west slope do not have programs yet, with new programs being at Ridgway, Navajo, and Highline. While our parks on the eastern plains, Trinidad Lake, North Sterling, and John Martin Reservoir, are always in need of more monitors!

The program offers a chance for people to get involved in species conservation, hone their bird identification skills, and see special wildlife. People interested should have skills in, or the desire to learn, identification of raptors in the field, the ability to use binoculars, basic computer skills and a positive attitude! Please reach out to dnr_cpwresourcestewardship@state.co.us if interested.

Voluntourism at State Forest State Park

Voluntourism is a great way for you and your family to not only get involved, but get outside! This summer, State Forest State Park, is testing the waters of voluntourism by asking folks to volunteer one day of trail work in exchange for a free, one-night stay in the park. On August 25th, volunteers will work at various sites in the parks to help restore and improve trail use for all.

"It's tough but rewarding work, and very much worth the effort. You will breath fresh, mountain air, see beautiful scenery and do something very positive for the state's natural resources. It'll be something to be proud of." -Tony Johnson, Senior Ranger at State Forest.

You can find more information and register for this opportunity here.

Eldorado Canyon Trail Days

Eldorado Canyon State Park is one of our most popular destinations for the rock climbing community. Mike McHugh, the park's resource technician, leads a team every Tuesday and Wednesday to maintain Eldorado Canyon's miles of trails. It can be hard work, but Mike loves it, he says, "Building with stone is somewhere between jigsaw puzzle and art. And there's a lot of opportunity to chat and enjoy the scenery." So don't become intimidated by the steep incline and scenery largely made up of rock.

If you would like to help improve the stunning trails throughout Eldorado Canyon, you can register and find more information about the project here.

Trail Restoration at Castlewood Canyon State Park

This October, Colorado Parks and Wildlife is partnering up with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado for a second year of work in Castlewood Canyon. The trail we have been working on is heavily eroded with deep ruts. This year we will continue work to help improve trail use by rebuilding drainage structures and creating timber and rock erosion prevention structures. If you would like to spend a crisp fall day outside and with good company, you can register for this project here.
