Welcome! CDOT employees are the heartbeat of our state’s transportation system. Whether paving roads, managing projects, or supporting our offices, their work is what moves our state forward. We know that sometimes the "way we’ve always done it" feels slow or frustrating. The Office of Process Improvement is here to help change that. We are committed to making our agency the most efficient in the country by focusing on staff ideas. On this page staff can explore resources, request a brainstorming session, or share an observed "bottleneck" or process pain point. Let’s build a better way to work, together.
Fuel your ideas: We don't just fix processes; we partner with staff to make the daily tasks easier, faster, and more rewarding. In a world where technology and budgets are constantly shifting, innovation is our best tool to stay ahead and keep our state moving safely. Employees might be wondering, "What’s in it for me?" (WIIFM). The answer is simple: by finding smarter ways to work, you reduce daily frustrations, save time, and gain more control over your day to day activities. To support staff, we offer specialized training to sharpen improvement skills, easy-to-use tools for problem-solving, and a catalog where we collect and share successful ideas so our employees hard work can be replicated across the entire agency.

Navigating growth: For larger shifts that impact multiple teams, our Business Projects and Change Management section provides the heavy-duty support business improvement project leaders need to succeed. We know that big changes can be daunting, so we offer hands-on assistance to guide projects from a simple idea to a finished reality. Our team helps build awareness across the agency so everyone understands the "why" behind the move, and we provide expert coaching to secure strong sponsorship from leadership. If a project involves new technology, we will even walk project leaders through the IT Pitch process to ensure the technical needs are met. We are here to manage the complex details so they can focus on delivering a better transportation system for our community. See the full Concept to Project (C2P) process here.

Mapping the future: Success starts with a clear destination. Our Strategy Support Services can help divisions or teams step back from the daily grind to focus on the big picture. We partner with teams for strategic visioning to define where they want to be in the future and assist with performance planning to set clear, reachable targets. By identifying specific strategies for improvement, we bridge the gap between the current workload and long-term operational goals. Think of us as the agency's GPS: we help plot the most efficient route, measure progress along the way, and adjust the course to ensure the goals are met.
