March 2024
In our dynamic healthcare environment, what remains consistent is the integral role of clinical leadership – it is and always will be the heart of healthcare. As an operational leader, I have always believed that the organization's success could not be attained without my partners—clinical leaders and their teams!
The clinical leader must have the knowledge and skill set to focus on the different priorities faced every day. From ensuring quality clinical outcomes to being an advocate for the team and those under their care, the clinical leader sets the standard to maintain compliance, spearheads innovation and transformation, and most importantly, develops and grows the care team. Just a few of the skill sets that effective leaders exhibit include:
Active Listener – Many times, I have witnessed clinical leaders using all senses and noting both verbal and nonverbal cues when with patients, families, staff, and myself! It is often an underestimated leadership quality; however, it is essential in health care.
Champion – Clinical leaders continue to work with their teams at all levels. They identify the knowledge, skills, and abilities of their team and align those talents with the clinical and organizational priorities, allowing them to mentor and develop future leaders.
Dedication – Clinical leaders consistently emulate the foundational leadership trait of dedication and tireless devotion to providing the best care possible. They demonstrate a connection with others by placing themselves in others' shoes, creating a deep connection with their patients and staff.
Empathy – Clinical leaders focus on identifying with others and understanding their point of view—what makes them tick, what inspires them, and the way they feel.
Heart – In all they do, clinical leaders lead from their heart. They are authentic and lead by example.
Mentor – Successful clinical leaders build their role on the people surrounding them. Team building and mentoring are the cornerstones of their leadership style, which is essential to leading a diverse group of people with distinct personalities and skills. Continuing to foster an environment of collaboration and professional growth is a key strategy for success.
Being a leader is an amazing journey that continues to provide opportunities for innovation as well as personal and professional growth. This journey is made better by working alongside dynamic clinical leaders. Thank you, clinical leaders, for being the center of our organizations and for being the heart of health care.
