A guide to help you learn the key terms and features of the new reporting tool, Insights.
Aggregates - When the values of multiple rows are grouped as input on criteria to form a single value of more significant meaning or measurement. Only implicit measures (see definition) can be aggregated in a report.
Alert - A feature that notifies users of changes in the data based on limits they set. Alerts can be set on tiles pinned from report visuals.
Analytic - A type of report that is developed in Power BI Desktop and is accessible in CORE via the Reports page (RPRTLST). It can be run directly in CORE and provides more interactive features for retrieving data, including the ability to layer in visualizations of the data to present it differently, depending on business needs.
Bookmark - A view of data captured in the Bookmarks pane of a report in Power BI Desktop or service. In Desktop, the bookmarks are saved in the pbix report file for sharing on the Power BI service. Used to replicate report tabs from infoAdvantage within Analytics.
Calculated Column - A model calculation used to add a column to a tabular model by writing a DAX formula. The formula must return a scalar value, and it's evaluated for each row in the table. Can be added to an Import or DirectQuery storage mode table.
Calculated Table - A model calculation used to add a table to a tabular model by writing a DAX formula. The formula must return a table object. Results in a table that uses Import storage mode.
Configurable Inquiry - A type of report built into the Advantage Insights module of CORE that is focused on quick, raw data queries that the user might want to export for additional data manipulation. It is accessible in CORE via the My Configurable Inquiries page (CIMYINQ).
Cross-Filter - Cross-filtering removes data that doesn't apply. Selecting Moderation in the doughnut chart cross-filters the line chart. The line chart now displays only data points that apply to the Moderation segment.
Cross-Highlight - Cross-highlighting retains all the original data points but dims the portion that doesn't apply to your selection. Selecting Moderation in the doughnut chart cross-highlights the column chart. The column chart dims all the data that doesn't apply to the Moderation segment and highlights all the data that does apply to the Moderation segment.
Custom Visual - Visuals that are created by the CORE user community and Microsoft. They can be downloaded from the Office store for use in Power BI reports or developed by the report developer.
Dashboard - Single screen with tiles of interactive visuals, text, and graphics. Collects your most important metrics, or a focused set of metrics, on one screen, to tell a story or answer a question. The dashboard content comes from one or more reports and one or more semantic models.
DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) - Microsoft formula language used to build formulas and expressions in Power BI Desktop, Azure Analysis Services, SQL Server Analysis Services, and Power Pivot in Excel. DAX queries are required to create Paginated Reports in Power BI Report Builder.
Dimension - Dimensions are categorical (text) data. A dimension describes a person, object, item, product, place, and time. Used to group measures into useful categories.
Drill Through - Refers to the ability to select a part of a visual and be taken to another page in the report, filtered to the data that relates to the part of the visual you selected on the original page.
DO (Delivery Order) - Initiates the Procurement process by requesting goods/services that are available via Master Agreement (MA) or State Price Agreement (SPA1)
Drill Up / Drill Down - Refers to the ability to explore the next level of detail in a report or visual.
Explicit Measures - Power BI uses explicit measures and implicit measures (see definition). Explicit measures are created by Report Developers and saved with the semantic model. They're displayed in Power BI as fields, and can therefore be used over and over. For example, a Report Developer creates an explicit measure "TotalInvoice" that sums all invoice amounts. Other Report Developers who use that semantic model (formerly known as a report universe), and who have edit access to the report, can select that field and use it to create a visual. When an explicit measure is added or dragged onto a report canvas, Power BI doesn't apply an aggregation. Creating explicit measures requires edit access to the semantic model.
Expression - Formulas, equations, and logic used to retrieve and manipulate data in Power BI Report Builder. Only accessible to report developers. Expressions are widely used throughout Power BI Report Builder paginated reports to retrieve, calculate, display, group, sort, filter, parameterize, and format data.
Field - Data model resource presented in the Fields pane. Used to configure Paginated Reports.
Filter - Fields used to limit data on a visualization, page, or report-wide level. Set by developers to replicate hard-coded filters.
Focus - The act of popping out a visual or tile to see more detail, e.g., "bringing something into a focused view."

Implicit Measures - Power BI uses implicit measures and explicit measures (see definition). Implicit measures are created dynamically. For example, when you drag a field onto the report canvas to create a visual. Power BI automatically aggregates the value using one of the built-in standard aggregations (SUM, COUNT, MIN, AVG, and others). Creating implicit measures requires edit access to the report, and so must be done by a Report Developer.

License - Report developers in Insights require a license to access Power BI and to complete report development activities.
Measure - A measure is a quantitative (numeric) field that can be used to do calculations. Common calculations are sum, average, and minimum.
Modeling - Preparing data for use in Power BI. This is a report development activity. Includes creating relationships between tables in multiple data sources, creating measures, and assigning metrics.

Paginated Report - A type of report separated into pages based on a granularity determined by the developer. It is the most similar to how reports looked in infoAdvantage, and the format is ideal for reports that are in a "final layout" when run, so they can be submitted as official reporting (such as for Annual Consolidated Financial Statements or other official agency reporting). Paginated reports can be accessed in CORE via the Reports page (RPRTLST).
Parameter - User-selectable fields that limit a data set in a report. Formerly known as "prompts" in infoAdvantage reports.
Power BI Desktop - Desktop application used to create and edit Analytics. A user is required to be a Report Developer to access this functionality.
Power BI Report Builder - A desktop application used to create and edit Paginated Reports. A user is required to be a Report Developer to access this functionality.
Power BI Workspace - Online application hosting and managing Power BI Reports and Semantic Models. Only Report Developers will have access to this space. It is separate from CORE and is accessed with a different login than your CORE ID. Workspaces stored in Premium capacity can be shared with free users. Personal workspaces (under My Workspace) can be hosted in a Premium capacity.
Publish - The term for when a Report Developer uploads a report to the Power BI Workspace so that it is accessible in CORE via the Reports pages. Allows users to access the report.

RDL (Report Definition Language) - XML representation of a paginated report definition. A report definition contains data retrieval and layout information for a report. RDL is composed of XML elements that match an XML grammar created for Power BI.
Report - One or more pages of interactive visuals, text, and graphics that together make up a single report.
Row-Level Security (RLS) - A feature that enables database administrators to control access to rows in a database table based on the characteristics of the user executing a query (for example, assigned security roles). Administrators can configure RLS for data models imported into Power BI with Power BI Desktop.
Semantic Model - Data model that Report Developers use to create Power BI reports. This replaces "Universes" from infoAdvantage.
Slicer - Power BI Desktop visualization type that allows a report developer to make selections on one or more fields represented by a dropdown, range, or tile view
Tile - A tile is an element of a dashboard, and is typically a snapshot of data drawn from an analytic, dashboard, or paginated report. Used as elements to build dashboards.

Visualization - Element of an Analytic report that gives a non-numerical view of the data, such as a chart, graph, table, etc. Can include tables, charts, graphs, slicers, etc.
