What is Title I and LAP reading?
Title I is a federally funded program to help students who are below grade level bridge the gap between them and their peers. LAP (Learning Assistance Program) is a state funded program to help students who need extra support in reading, writing, and math.
Here at Stanwood Elementary we receive money from both Title I and LAP and serve students in Kindergarten through 4th grade in the area of reading.
What will my child do in Title I/LAP groups?
Students will be in small groups (1-4 students per group). Each group lasts for about 30 minutes and students get extra support with the the fundamentals of reading with emphasis on phonemic awareness and phonics. Students will work on increasing vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension of texts.
How did my child qualify for services?
We assess all students three times yearly using different measures. Based on the assessment results and classroom teacher's input, students scoring in the 35th percentile or lower are considered for the reading program.
What is phonemic awareness?
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, move, or change sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. This is an important basic skill that gets students ready to develop into readers.
What is phonics?
Phonics is the connection between written words and spoken sounds (phonemes). Readers use phonics to decode, or sound out, written words.
