There are many ways to help your child become the best reader they can be. When your child is reading, please remind them of the reading tips below. These are strategies that we use often during our Reading Group instruction and they should be familiar to our students. We have also included ideas by grade level in the "Reading Tips" drop down menu above.
Take a picture walk
Count the number of paragraphs in the story or chapter
Make a prediction - what do you think the story will be about?
Look for sight words
Pay attention to punctuation
Read silently AND aloud
Time yourself for 1 minute, then time yourself again. Did you read more words the second time?
Read it again! Multiple reading will increase your fluency and you will learn something new
Summarize what you read in a reading journal
Answer comprehension questions in complete sentences:
Remember we never start an answer with “because”
Find proof of your answer in the story
Write down the page number or paragraph where you find proof
Choose a book that is at a lower level to develop confidence
Read aloud to your child and then have them reread after you
While you are reading, stop every so often and have your child read a few words
Give positive feedback
