Guiding Principle
St. Anthony’s students are expected to pursue the Regents diploma pathway throughout their high school career. This pathway establishes a consistent standard of academic proficiency for all students. Earning a Regents diploma requires passing five Regents examinations with a score of 65 or higher. The earliest a student may deviate from this pathway is at the end of 10th grade. Students and parents are strongly encouraged to retake Regents exams in August when necessary to stay on track. St. Anthony’s does not offer any regents examinations in January.
Required Regents Exams for Diploma Pathway
To earn a Regents diploma, students must pass the following five Regents examinations:
English Language Arts (ELA): Typically taken in 11th grade.
Mathematics: Algebra I (typically 9th/10th grade).
Science: Living Environment or Earth Science (typically 9th/10th grade).
Social Studies: Global History and Geography II (typically 10th grade).
Additional Exam: U.S. History and Government is often the most accessible option.
**Since St. Anthony’s offers local diplomas, our ability to impose consequences for Regents exam failures or for students who do not follow retake policies is limited. However, the expectations outlined in this guiding principle should be clearly communicated in all discussions with students and families.**
When a Student Leaves the Regents Pathway
A student may be considered off the Regents pathway in a given subject area under the following circumstances:
Mathematics: Fails both Algebra I and Geometry twice.
Science: Fails both Living Environment and Earth Science twice.
English: Fails the ELA exam twice.
Social Studies: Fails Global History and Geography II exam twice.
Note: Students must pass at least one Social Studies exam. U.S. History and Government can fulfill this requirement and may represent the most accessible option.

All students are held to the same academic standards, including Regents diploma requirements. Our website clearly states that safety net options for New York State assessments are not accommodations provided by our school.
Incoming Freshmen
A failed Regents exam in 8th grade indicates that the student may lack the necessary foundation for success in the corresponding high school course. In such cases, students should retake the relevant course in 9th grade to build the appropriate skills and knowledge.
