Policies & Procedures
Students must follow the School Code of Conduct and all applicable policies.
General classroom procedures
In order to have an effective learning environment, there must be clear and consistent classroom procedures. To conduct class, students must be in a seat, have their eyes forward, and be silent.
#1 Hand Signs System
I. Bathroom
II. Tissue
III. Pencil/pen
IIII. Emergency/other
Mr. Mano will encourage students to memorize the above hand signs to minimize disruption of instruction. A student should raise the corresponding hand sign and Mr. Mano will decide whether to non-verbally grant permission.
#2. Behavioral Narration
Mr. Mano will highlight good behaviors. Example: "I see x is over here sitting patiently" and compliment student work. Exemplary student work will be posted outside the classroom. Mr. Mano will “re-direct” the student’s attention back on task and restate the expectation. Please encourage your students to be respectful in all interactions.
#3. Tier system for consequences
A tier system of consequences will be used in Mr. Mano’s classroom that includes the following:
Green: warning, re-direct, praise
Yellow: Loss of privilege, seat change
Red: Demerit, detention, call home, and last resort is to send the student to office
#4. Noise levels
If the class becomes too loud, Mr. Mano will use a visible decibel meter, write NOISE on the board and take away letters until NO. Then students will all have to work silently for 10 minutes. In general, Mr. Mano will re-direct individual students 3 times to cycle through tiers and then a higher consequence is given. Mr. Mano will re-direct the whole class 2 times then will use Group silent cue - Class, class - yes, yes. If that doesn't work, student receive a higher consequence such as a demerit or detention. For classroom use only by a single teacher. All rights reserved.
#5. Hall Re-focus Forms
If for a disciplinary reason a student is pulled from classroom due to a class disruption, the student has to fill out a reflection form. This will help enable the student to learn from the situation.
During instruction:
1. Redirection back on task. When students are working on class materials that do not pertain to social studies class, Mr. Mano will ask that student the task that we are currently working on and encourage that student to complete the task. Exclusionary discipline should be limited as much as possible due to the damage it poses to the learning process. A rehabilitative philosophy to the classroom environment will be posed to enable students to correct their behaviors which were detrimental.
a. Reinforce positive behavior.
It is my firm belief that students need to be intrinsically motivated.
Mr. Mano will periodically encourage students and praise their hard work. Mr. Mano plans to maintain effective communication with parents and guardians regarding their student’s performance throughout the school year. When any disciplinary issues arise, parents/guardians will be made aware of these issues to be addressed
b. Behavioral narration
While students complete an activity, Mr. Mano will circulate the classroom to survey each student’s level of participation. When a student misbehaves or is not on task, Mr. Mano will highlight another student who is working and is on task.
c. Camouflage Message
In the case of students talking out of turn to the neglect of the classroom environment, Mr. Mano will gradually approach that student to inform them that they will need to return to working on that task. In making conversation, Mr. Mano will also attempt to connect that student’s interest to the class material.
