The conceptual design for the SpaDL was inspired by the Astrobeat - a spaceship featured in the Space Channel 5 game. The initial concept art included the timing stars and the score counter being housed in the space ship. Below the space ship is a platform that will house the servo motors moving up and down to outplay a sequence as well as the microphone, coin slot, joystick, button, and microphone to record user inputs (microphone was later removed from design during simplification of the game).
In the overall final assembly, there were several changes from the original conceptual design. These changes were mainly seen in the platform and the implementation of an LED matrix to display a score counter. The platform user input panel was simplified from having audio inputs and a microphone as well as the joystick, coin slot, and button to just having the joystick, coin slot, and button. Nevertheless, the platform still houses all of the servo motors and electronic circuitry. Likewise, the platform contains the instructions for playing the game on the right side panel of the SpaDL. The Astrobeat houses the timing LEDs that indicates to the player when 10s has passed and when the game will eventually end.
