Technology development to probe genome structure & function
DNA-binding proteins are essential for reading, regulating, and repairing the genome. To study these processes, we develop experimental methods that utilize cutting-edge DNA sequencing technologies to map where specific proteins bind across the genome in single cells and on single molecules of DNA. We also develop the analytical and computational tools needed to make sense of these new data types.
The biology of centromeres & heterochromatin
Large swaths of the genome contain tandemly repeated DNA sequences called satellite DNA. Some of these satellite DNA sequences are critical for the establishment and maintenance of centromeres, which are essential for proper chromosome segregation during cell division. However, other satellite DNA sequences have very poorly understood functions. We are interested in applying new tools and technologies to explore the function and regulation of these extremely challenging regions of the genome.
