The mechanical design of Calcifer's Cook-Off! features:
Outer case made of Duron plywood featuring finger joints
Gear return mechanism featuring a servo motor and rolling gear slide
Three 3D-printed sliding pans with easy-to-grab handles
Laser cut birch plywood decorations and labels for game directions and aesthetic
All parts were designed in Autodesk Fusion 360, unless specified otherwise.
Sketch
The initial concept design featured 3 pans that users could move to virtually cook their dishes. Gears would be dispensed through the mouth of Calcifer at the front of the game.
Initial CAD
The final design features 3 pans attached to stove sliders that are fixtured with nuts and bolts. The outer casing contains holes for cooking status LED indicators, LCD matrix, gear out, cooking knob potentiometer, start button, and power wires.

Mechanical Features
The outer casing is made of 1/8" Duron plywood that was laser cut. The casing has approximately a width of 514 mm, a length of 419 mm, and a maximum height of 377 mm. These dimensions fit within the maximum of 500x500x1000mm requirement defined in the specifications.
The outer casing walls were attached using finger joints that were hot glued together.

The prize gear out mechanism consists of a tube gear holder, intermediate slide section, gear ramp, gear basket, servo holder, and servo attachment. All these parts are 3D-printed with PLA.

The tube holder can hold a stack of over 50 gears. Gears in this stack are knocked out by a servo motor that is propped up with a servo holder and contains a custom servo attachment. The gear then passes through an intermediate slide where the gear transitions from a horizontal, flat position to a vertical, upright position. In this new position, the gear can easily roll down the gear out ramp, where it is then caught by a gear out basket. Users can then retrieve their prize gears from this basket through the fire from Calcifer's mouth.

The pan slider features a stove sliding track, a sliding pan, and an end stopper. All these parts are 3D-printed with PLA.

Stove-Pan Slider CAD Assembly
For a player to virtually cook their food, they are tasked with moving the pan on and off the stove. An interactable pan-stove system was designed, where a pan slides on a stove track. The stove contains a hole in the center for IR sensor object detection, thus when the pan is on the stove, the IR sensor is activated. Stoppers are included in the design to prevent the user from removing the pans from their respective stove sliding tracks. All stove-pan slider systems are attached to the outer casing with 3 nuts and bolts each.

Labels for intuitive gameplay and decorative features for aesthetic appeal were created using laser cut 1/8" birch plywood and 1/8" acrylic. A stove knob was 3D-printed, which was used to set the heat/difficulty of the game. Decorations feature characters from the movie, Howl's Moving Castle, which the game drew inspiration from. Some of these were designed in Fusion 360, while others were created in Adobe Illustrator.
