Mission
The Saint Andrew Society of Sarasota (SASS) was formed in 1979 to provide social and cultural activities relating to Scottish heritage and to emphasize Sarasota's settlement by Scots (in 1885). As a 501 c 3, St. Andrew Scottish Society Scholarship Fund, Inc. (SASSF), since 1990, it has given $167,000 in scholarships to 151 qualified college-bound high school seniors as they graduate from 20 high schools in Manatee and Sarasota Counties and Lemon Bay in Charlotte County.
Vision
SASS sponsors and participates in area Scottish social and cultural events, including:
Burn's Poetry Club lunch and poetry readings, held monthly (in season)
Ceilidh and dinner to honor St Andrew's Day
Scottish Christmas Luncheon,
Robert Burn's Supper, held in January
Scottish Highland Games in 2024
Kirkin' o' the Tartans, held in conjunction with an area worship service
Scholarship Luncheon, held in April, to recognize the scholarship winners
Memorial Day 2023 at Oakridge Cemetery
Through its social and civic involvement, SASS enhances awareness of Sarasota's significant Scottish heritage and attracts donations for the St. Andrew Scottish Society Scholarship Fund.
