The St. Andrew’s 7th Grade Mathematics course builds upon students’ foundational mathematical skills while introducing increasingly sophisticated concepts in algebra, geometry, statistics, and probability. Students develop algebraic reasoning through the use of variables, expressions, equations, order of operations, and properties of numbers, while strengthening their understanding and application of integers, rational numbers, fractions, decimals, and percents. The course emphasizes proportional relationships, rates, proportions, scale drawings, coordinate graphs, slope, and direct variation, providing a foundation for future algebraic study. Students also explore geometric relationships, measurement, area, volume, surface area, and congruence, as well as collect, represent, and analyze data using statistical measures and graphical displays. Probability concepts include experimental and theoretical probability, sample spaces, compound events, combinations, and permutations. Throughout the course, students apply mathematical concepts to authentic problem-solving situations and performance tasks, with an emphasis on mathematical reasoning, communication, accuracy, and the ability to select and justify appropriate strategies for solving complex problems. The course aligns with the Grade 7 Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and prepares students for the increased algebraic and quantitative demands of 8th grade mathematics.
Grading:
Class is graded on a total points system. This means that each assignment has a point value. Class assignments/activities are usually about 10 points while larger assessments are 50 to 100 points. Class activities are daily, however. This means that they add up! Tests will be heavier grades pointwise, but students will have an opportunity to try again if they complete some intervention tasks associated with the questions that caused the not-so-great score.
Behavior Expectations:
There will be a silent “do now” task at the beginning of each class to set the tone. There will also be some short, direct instruction periods where I will be teaching a skill and asking students questions. The majority of the class will be time when students work alongside their peers and are able to collaborate or ask questions. Students who have difficulty with this sort of style may choose to move to a station to work independently.
We will frequently move about the room, use the white boards, Stations 1-3, and take brain breaks to ease “math stress.” Students who have difficulty with this sort of style may choose to move to a station to work independently.
Under no circumstances will students be allowed to tease one another, throw objects, write on or destroy another’s property, deliberately bother or harass classmates or talk at inappropriate times.
Homework
Students will have three homework passes a trimester. This means that if they forget their homework, or cannot complete it due to an event, they will simply use a pass. I will keep track of the passes electronically. If students DO NOT use the passes, the passes will turn into extra credit.
