Ball Words
Ball words are the sight words that your children will be learning to help them become fluent readers. They will be learning many strategies for using decoding and comprehension to read texts, but sight words are those words that they just know at a glance, similar to the way they will learn math facts in later grades. It is hard to become a fluent reader if you have to stop and think about every single word, so learning these words (also referred to as DOLCH words) will really help them read more naturally. Then, there is more energy left to devote to the less familiar words!
Though there are other lists that some students will work on, the goal for mastery in kindergarten is the three lists below: baseball, soccer, and basketball words. I will be sending home suggestions of activities you can use to help your child learn these words.
