The Church celebrates the Nativity of St. John the Baptist on June 24th.
During the great cycle of the Christian year, there are three festivals in celebration of a person’s birth. We celebrate the births of John the Baptist, the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 8th) and Jesus (December 25th)
The Nativity of John the Baptist is one of the most ancient of all the Church’s feasts; it is mentioned several times by St. Augustine in his sermons and in a Martyrology written around 440 A.D.
It was decided to observe this feast six months before Christmas because Elizabeth was in her sixth month of pregnancy with John at the time of Annunciation of our Lord. It is not by coincidence that the birth of John the Baptist falls shortly after the summer solstice while that of Christ is after the winter solstice. In the northern hemisphere, June 21st is the longest day of the year; after that the days get shorter and shorter. After the winter solstice, the days will gradually increase in length. St. Augustine drew a connection between this cosmic pattern. “he must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30). (Companion to the Calendar, LTP)
In honor of this great solemnity we will have music at the 8:30 a.m. Mass on Wednesday, June 24th .
June 24th | 5:00pm | Church
