We hosted our first virtual employment fair this year. Because we are still in the pandemic, we asked employers to discuss how their companies and organizations are keeping employees safe and what kind of protocols they are using for onboarding. Representatives from Amazon, BrightStar Care, International Rescue Committee, San Lorenzo Adult School's Career Technical Education courses in business and in education were on hand for this event representing industries that have been identified as pandemic-proof.

The pictures that follow are from this event.

Winter Virtual Health Resource Fair

February 9, 2021 10AM - 11:30 AM

We held our first virtual health resource fair on February 9, 2021. Because this event landed in the midst of the pandemic, we had a COVID-centered theme. Students prepared for it in a six-week EL Civics study on health. We asked presenters to provide 6-10 vocabulary words from their topics to prepare our students. Students were given a pre-event survey to assess what they already knew about the featured topics.

We featured ZOOM Simultaneous Interpretation for the first time, which supports simultaneous language translations as the name suggests. Attendees were able to listen to the entire event in Spanish, Chinese or English.

We are grateful for the support and participation of several District personnel representing the healthcare industry. The event was punctuated by the presence of our superintendent, Dr. Daryl Camp, along with several District administrators.

Employment Series 2020 ENG_Zoom.pdf

This was our second year hosting What Employers Want You to Know, a moderated panel discussion in which employers answer questions about resumes, the hiring process, employee behavior, and more. Participants included BrightStar Care, Claremont Club & Spa: A Fairmont Hotel, Rubicon Programs/America's Job Center of California, and Sugar Bowl Bakery. It was the second to last event in our Employment Series leading up to our annual Spring Job Fair. However, due to mounting concerns regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), it was the last event held in the College & Career Service Center just days before the shelter in place order went into effect.

The Family Literacy Reading Circles Project is a new collaboration between San Lorenzo Adult School, San Lorenzo Library, and retired librarian and San Lorenzo Unified School District board member, Penny Peck. Its objectives are to train students to conduct reading circles so they can volunteer to read children's books to children including those with special abilities, to teach students how to become better readers of children's books, and to encourage students to read (or read more) to their children and grandchildren.
