**Information and schedule may be updated/adjusted for Covid polices from administration.
Welcome to First Grade! We are so excited to have your child in our class this year! This is a reference for some of the most common beginning of the year questions. Please contact us with any questions!
Absences: If your child is absent from school, the office requires a note from the parent stating your child was absent. Additionally, if you would like absent work to be sent home, the office requests you call the school prior to 10:00 AM. When absences are planned or you will be out of town, please give at least 2 days notice so the teacher will have time to prepare the absent work to send with your child.
Auditorium: The morning drop off period begins at 7:15 AM. Teachers and Teacher Assistants rotate the morning duty of supervising the students. While we are under policies for Covid-19, we will open classroom doors to students at 7:30. From this time until the official start of school students will be permitted to do things such as watch a read-a-long story, or other types of activities. Once the first bell rings is when we will transition to begin our official day. Please see the school website for drop-off information.
Birthdays: Birthdays are celebrated throughout the year on or near the day of each child’s birthday. COVID-19 policy does not permit treats this year. Your child will be permitted to have a free dress day on the day of their birthday. Summer birthdays are celebrated at the end of the year on a day designated by the administration.
Conduct/Behavior:
Snack: We schedule a mid-morning snack time daily and ask that you send a healthy snack with your child. Fruits, vegetables, crackers, cheese, granola bars are all good choices. With Covid policies in place we will be eating our snack outside this year, so we ask that you do not send any type of snack that will require a spoon.
Water bottles are permitted as long as they are not the plastic/disposable type. We also ask they have a sipper type lid to help in the event of a spill. We will not use water fountains this year, so it is important that your child has a water bottle each day. We will keep them in their cubbies.
Lunch: Students will eat in the cafeteria at 11:15-11:45. First grade is not permitted to buy ice cream or snacks.
Guardian Angels: The Eighth Grade students serve as our Guardian Angels providing guidance and modeling appropriate church behavior. We meet with them on several occasions and exchange handmade gifts and cards that we make at school. Administration policy states gifts and cards from home will not be permitted. *This program will be in place this year, but be handled differently with Covid restrictions.
Weekly Test: There will be a Reading and Spelling test given each week. The tests will be on Friday morning. In the event there is no school on Friday the test will be given on Thursday. Our Reading series has 5 stories in a unit and at the completion of the unit a unit test will be given that week. The test is given over a three day period and will include the skills learned throughout the unit. There will also be a unit spelling test that will include a list of words from the entire unit. At the time of the unit test, a letter will be sent home with more information as well as the list of words that will be tested.
Math tests are completed every 5 lessons for Math facts and 10 lessons for skills. The webpage will be where this information will be posted.
Homework:
Spelling– There will be a spelling menu that will be completed each week and returned on Friday. A monthly spelling “menu” will be kept in your child’s binder for the/she to choose which activities he/she would like to complete that week. A list with the words for the unit will be kept in your child’s binder as well as on the website under Weekly Story Information.
Math Homework– We use the Saxon Math series. On days where there is a new lesson presented, there will be homework that is sent home and due back the following day. This will usually consist of the back side of a worksheet with the lesson presented in class that day as well as the back side of the math fact practice worksheet that was also presented in class that day. Please remember that it will be a review of the lesson presented so your child will be familiar with the lesson. There will not be Math homework on the day where we test in Math which is every 10 lessons.
Reading Story: All stories are viewed online and books will not be sent home.
*No homework is given on the weekend!
Invitations: We are not allowed to distribute party invitations unless there are invitations for the entire class or all the children that are the same gender as your child. Contact the office for any needed addresses as classroom teachers are not allowed to give this information out. Thank you for your understanding this! **COVID -19 may also place restrictions on this.
