Over 21 state studies confirm that school librarians and school libraries support students in academic achievement, lifelong learning, 21st century skills, and reading. (AASL, 2013)
“Research consistently shows that when children have access to good libraries with plenty of good books and with adequate staffing, they read more, and thus do better on reading tests." (Krashen, 2004)
Today's information landscape changes quickly, and is increasingly complex as new technology becomes available. School librarians set students up for success by providing essential digital literacy skills and research training. (AASL, 2014)

Sora, by OverDrive
The Sister Damien Peters Library provides students access to high quality reading materials.
An excellent array of fiction and non-fiction books are available in print for students to check out in the library during class or before school.
The library also provides access to Sora, by OverDrive - an eReader that empowers students by connecting them to e-books and audiobooks curated by STA and approximately 50,000 e-books and audiobooks from the San Diego County Library's digital collection.
The Sr. Damien Peters Library enhances and continues to support students in reading and traditional literacy skills. However, schools must reach beyond the essential nurturing of reading, writing, and grammar to include support for today's technology. Both traditional and digital literacy are central to the library’s mission, as STA recognizes critical skills for students also include: accessing and utilizing various types of media, interpreting sources in a variety of formats, and creating digital media.
A few ways in which the Sr. Damien Peters Library integrates technology are:
the librarian teaches essential technology, research skills, and general digital citizenship using vetted curricula.
by housing trusted databases and websites on the library website that students can easily access for their learning and research.
by enabling student and faculty access to thousands of age-appropriate e-books and audiobooks through Sora, by OverDrive.
by providing students access to a set of Chromebooks for the development of technology skills, modern research techniques, and digital citizenship skills.
Museum specimens available through the Nature to You Loan Program
The librarian creates a space where exploration is encouraged by regularly creating themed displays for notable books, and by taking part in the Natural History Museum’s Nature to You Loan Program. This program allows the Sr. Damien Peters Library to routinely borrow exhibits from the Natural History Museum and display them for students.
As an expert on media and information access, the librarian is an asset to both the student and the teacher.
In order to best meet the needs of students, the librarian works in conjunction with classroom teachers on projects and assignments. This collaboration has many benefits: it allows the librarian to provide the most relevant research and information instruction; it allows the students to hear multiple perspectives; it gives the teacher another co-conspirator in education that can provide learning resources and insight.
At STA, the librarian curates online resources for student projects, and co-teaches with faculty.
