The fifth-grade students at Kanglang Elementary School had their very first international exchange today. We felt both excited and a little nervous. Through an online meeting, we connected with KidsStar School in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Each student had to go on stage and introduce themselves in English in front of the camera for about 30 seconds. Although the time was short, we practiced a lot beforehand and did our best to improve our pronunciation and content. Our teachers were very impressed and praised us for making such rapid progress, which gave us more confidence.
During the exchange, we listened carefully to the Indonesian students’ introductions. They shared their dreams—some wanted to become soccer players, while others hoped to be astronauts or doctors. It was very interesting to hear. We also noticed that the Indonesian students were confident and natural in front of the camera. In comparison, we were a bit shy at first, but gradually relaxed and became more confident as the activity went on.
This exchange helped me get to know students my age from another part of the world. I realized that although we have many similarities, there are also cultural differences. This experience broadened my horizons and made me look forward to the next exchange even more.
