The Year 4 classroom was buzzing with excitement, even though the skies were grey and damp-looking. Our enthusiastic explorers came to school ready for anything, kitted out in their welly boots, all set for a fantastic trip to the Thames Explorer Trust at Kew Bridge.
The Thames Explorer Trust is a wonderful environmental education charity dedicated to raising awareness of London's famous river. The day was packed with hands-on, interactive programmes that brought their learning to life. Their discoveries included shrimp and an eel!
They got to investigate the river's wildlife, delve into its fascinating geography and history, and discuss important environmental issues. The highlight for many was the fieldwork on the foreshore just downstream of Kew Bridge. Clambering down to the river bank, the children became river detectives, searching for clues about how the Thames has inspired people for generations and discovering one of London's least understood wild areas.
The experience was a brilliant way to wrap up their half term's work. It linked directly to their Georgraphy topic - 'Rivers, Water and Weather' and gave the children a unique opportunity to connect with the natural environment.
On Wednesday, St Stephen's came together for a beautiful and heart-warming Harvest Festival Celebration. It was a truly special collective worship, allowing us to pause, share our thankfulness, and dedicate ourselves to serving others in our community.
The spirit of giving was truly inspiring! We were overwhelmed by the generous donations of food and essential items, which lined the school hall. A huge thank you to all our families for supporting this vital cause. These donations will be delivered to the Richmond Food Bank, providing much-needed support to families in need within our local area.
The children’s performances were absolutely magnificent. Accompanied on the piano by Miss Jiang, the whole school sang rousing renditions of our traditional favourites, 'Cauliflowers Fluffy' and 'Lord of the Harvest'. A special mention must go to the Year 3 and 4 Choir, who gave a wonderfully slick performance of a song they've been learning - complete with actions - all about potatoes!
We also had the privilege of hearing from Pastor Lauren from St Stephen's Church, who shared the powerful and fitting story of the feeding of the 5,000.
It was a lovely occasion, celebrating the harvest and expressing our gratitude by supporting those facing hardship.
Thank you, Mrs Blomley and all the children who presented the assembly for their thoughtful efforts in making the occasion so special.
