Our Year 6 pupils recently visited Heatham House Youth Centre in Twickenham to take part in the invaluable Junior Citizenship course. As our eldest students prepare for secondary school and navigate increasing independence over the coming year, this hands-on workshop equipped them with essential safety knowledge for everyday life.
Split into small groups, the children moved through an interactive carousel of practical workshops and expert talks:
Electrical Safety: Learning how to use home appliances safely, including the dangers of overloading plug sockets and trailing wires.
Water Safety: Understanding the hidden risks around open water and the crucial rule of never swimming without a lifeguard present.
First Aid & Emergency Response: Gaining practical skills on how to assist someone in need and how to confidently make a 999 call.
Travel & Road Safety: Discovering how to stay safe when using buses and trains, along with a vital lesson on vehicle blind spots and pedestrian awareness.
The children represented the school brilliantly, asking thoughtful questions and actively participating in every session. These core life skills will serve them well as they take their next steps towards becoming confident, independent young adults!
Our Reception playground has a fantastic new sandpit area! This incredible addition to our outdoor environment features a bespoke roofed structure built with exceptional craftsmanship, ensuring it will be a high-quality, lasting feature of our school for many years to come.
A massive thank you goes to St Stephen's parent Laurie Hams and his dedicated team, who generously volunteered their time and expertise to bring this project to life. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the FOSS team, who funded the materials for the build.
The children are absolutely loving their new space, and it has already enriched our outdoor learning provision immensely. Open-ended play, particularly with versatile materials like sand, plays a vital role in early childhood development. As the children dig, scoop, pour, and mould, they actively strengthen both their fine and gross motor skills while refining their hand-eye coordination and spatial awareness. The tactile experience of exploring dry, wet, and smooth textures promotes sensory integration, while experimenting with volume, weight, and shape introduces early mathematical and scientific concepts in a natural, hands-on way. Working together to build structures encourages rich conversation, teamwork, and social negotiation, while the calming, repetitive nature of sand play offers a wonderful outlet for emotional regulation.
We are so grateful to everyone involved in creating such a joyful and rich learning environment for our youngest pupils.
Huge congratulations to Vensan, who scored a magnificent victory at the recent London Junior Chess Championships (LJCC) – Hammersmith Qualifier!
Playing with brilliant focus and strategy, Vensan won the tournament and secured his place in the prestigious LJCC Finals in the Under-8 age group.
The London Junior Chess Championship is one of the most respected and competitive junior chess events in the UK, with a rich history dating back to 1924. Young chess players from across the region compete in rigorous qualifying heats throughout the autumn to earn a spot at the grand finals. Qualifying for the Under-8 section requires exceptional skill, tactical thinking, and concentration across multiple intense rounds of play.
Having conquered the Hammersmith qualifier, Vensan will now compete at the LJCC Finals in December.
We are all incredibly proud of Vensan’s dedication and achievement!
A huge congratulations to Megan, Keira, Henry and Mattie, who took to the open-air waters at Hampton Pool at the weekend for a sponsored swim! Joined by fellow local swimmers, our brilliant children pushed through the lengths to raise money for a cause very close to our school community.
Together, the children managed to raise an incredible over £350 for SEEN Charity!
Based in Twickenham and founded by a St Stephen’s parent, SEEN is a local charity that provides a safe, supportive space for young people, parents, and families. Their dedicated team offers free, confidential support and listening services for individuals facing unplanned pregnancy, baby loss, and family challenges, alongside running valuable relationship and health education sessions in the community. We are immensely proud of Megan, Keira, Henry and Mattie for showing such determination, community spirit, and kindness. A big thank you as well to all the family, friends, and generous sponsors who supported them along the way!
