This week, from 15th to 21st June, our school community is proud to join millions around the globe in recognising Refugee Week 2026. This annual festival is a powerful opportunity to celebrate the immense contributions, vibrant creativity, and inspiring resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary. The week also leads up to World Refugee Day, which is observed globally on Saturday, 20th June.
The theme for this year’s Refugee Week is Courage - and we have explored this theme in our class worship this week. It takes a profound amount of courage to leave behind everything familiar, face dangerous and uncertain journeys, and try to rebuild a life in a completely new country. At the same time, this theme reminds us of the everyday courage needed to speak up for others, welcome newcomers, and foster a community where everyone feels safe and valued.
At home, Refugee Week offers a wonderful prompt for families to talk about kindness, empathy, and what it truly means to feel at home. If you would like to explore these topics further with your children, there are many excellent, age-appropriate books and family guides available to help steer these meaningful conversations.
Ultimately, recognising Refugee Week allows us to actively live out our core Christian values of Love, Compassion, and Hospitality. By learning about the journeys of those seeking sanctuary, we answer the biblical call to welcome the stranger and recognise the inherent dignity in every individual as a child of God. This week challenges us to cultivate the moral courage required to stand up for the vulnerable, ensuring our school community remains a beacon of safety and inclusion.
Jesus said, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find” (Matthew 7:7).
I have found prayer to be a quiet but powerful gift in the midst of a busy and often unpredictable life. It reminds us that we are not alone, and it genuinely makes a difference in our hearts, our homes, and in the things we face.
As both a parent and a priest, with two children here at St Stephen’s, I would love to pray with you for our school, our children, and anything you may be facing. Whether prayer is familiar to you or something you are curious to explore, you are very welcome.

Where: Please meet outside the Chertsey Road entrance, where I will greet you and sign you in.
