The Year 3 corridors have been buzzing with excitement this week as our budding musicians finally take their violins, violas, and cellos home! After two and a half terms of hard work, we are thrilled that the children are now being entrusted with these instruments, loaned by the Richmond Music Trust.
This is a wonderful milestone in their musical journey. Now that the "squeaky" early stages are behind them, we anticipate a real surge in confidence as they begin practicing at home. We’re so proud of their progress so far and can’t wait to hear the results of their dedication in the weeks to come. Happy practicing, Year 3!
On Tuesday, we were thrilled to welcome the wonderfully talented author and illustrator Aoife Dooley to our school. She inspired our children with the vibrant world of her graphic novel, Squid Squad, sharing her journey as a storyteller and artist.
The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the hands-on workshop, where the children learned the secrets behind Aoife's unique drawing style. After mastering how to sketch some of the iconic members of the Squid Squad, the pupils let their imaginations run wild, designing their own underwater characters.
This week, Year 1 explored the fascinating concept of the Tree of Life.
Our journey began in Milan, Italy, as we looked at images of the incredible Tree of Life sculpture designed by Marco Balich. The children were amazed to learn that this structure stands 35 metres high - so large that people can actually climb up inside it! We discussed how the Tree of Life is a powerful symbol used across many different cultures and myths to represent all of nature connected within a single tree.
Before picking up their tools, the children spent time planning their own unique sculptures. They considered some big design questions: Would their tree have many delicate branches or just a few sturdy ones? What would the leaves look like? Would it be a home for colorful flowers, curious animals, or tiny insects?
To bring their visions to life, the children mastered several paper-sculpting techniques, including rolling, folding, scrunching, and cutting to transform flat sheets into 3D masterpieces. They finished their work by drawing intricate details directly onto their sculptures to add personality and life.
We are so impressed with their creativity and technical skill.
