This year's theme for STEM Week was 'Change and Adapt'. Year groups had the opportunity to explore how animals and plants adapt to their surroundings and discuss climate change and how communities adapt to weather extremes. Reception explored how shadows change and Year One and Three investigated how magnets an create change through games. While Year Five took part in a live CBBC Space workshop. Great fun was had by all!
STEM week is the perfect opportunity for some hands on scientific investiagations. Year One used magnets to assess the metal content of coins. Mrs Warburton told us: "We got out our magnets and to see if we could find out if the metal content has changed over time. Before 1992, 1ps and 2ps were made out of a mixture of copper, tin and zinc (not magnetic!). By1992 these metals were getting expensive so The Royal Mint, who manufacture our coins, started using steel which is so much cheaper. They coated the coins in copper so that they would still look the same but, because steel contains iron, the new coins are more magnetic. The children loved the experiment - the results were so clear for them - they concluded that our modern coins contain more metal!"
Meanwhile in Year Two, Yousafzai's scientific enquiry was all about finding the most suitable materials for a raincoat. This was an exciting way for the children to apply their scientific knowledge in a real-world context. Testing for waterproofing, durability, and comfort gave them valuable insights into material properties, while making learning fun and interactive.
