How did you get the job at JLC-Tech?

I learned about my co-op job at JLC Tech from my teachers, who had previous students employed there.  I was offered a co-op position in their marketing department and have been there since the start of this school year.

What do you do at JLC-Tech?

At JLC-Tech, my role in the marketing department involves creating different types of marketing materials. These include informative handouts, detailed instruction sheets, and eye-catching web banners and graphics for the website. This opportunity allows me to engage across various design platforms. Every week I maintain the company contact database and work on updating contact information for the company newsletters.

Why did you choose to participate in the co-op program in your senior year?

I chose to participate in the co-op program to gain more experience. This job specifically was perfect for me because it tested my knowledge in the marketing field and let me test-run what I plan to pursue in the future. Because of this experience, I have decided to further my studies in marketing in college, as my graphic design background will be an asset. Participating in the co-op program was very beneficial for me. It has allowed me to become more independent and has empowered me to take charge of my work. With each new project I complete for JLC-Tech I become more confident with what I know and excited to explore and refine my skills.

What advice do you have for students who are thinking about participating in the co-op program?

To future co-op students, I strongly encourage participation in the co-op program. It offers the opportunity to kickstart your career and gain hands-on job experience that may not be learned in a regular shop setting. While it is a significant transition to a new learning environment, it is worth taking the opportunity to participate in the co-op experience for those fortunate to do so.

This is our fourth year with the SST Cooperative Education program. This program truly is a gem and provides a huge opportunity to the students, giving them a head start in the industry. Not many students can say they have on-the-job experience right out of high school. We look forward to continuing with the program!

South Shore Tech thanks JLC-Tech for their continued support of our Cooperative Education Program!

South Shore Tech Cooperative Education Program

Developing workplace readiness skills is the backbone of South Shore Vocational Technical High School. Throughout technical shops and related classrooms, students acquire an understanding of their specific career field unparalleled to traditional high schools.

We are proud to offer the benefit of cooperative education to our students and businesses within our communities. We rely on businesses to support our mission of providing rigorous and relevant hands-on instructional experiences in order to develop confident, civic-minded students who achieve ambitious career goals leading to their personal fulfillment, economic independence, and a positive impact on their community. In return, employers are able to recruit and hire eager workers who are well versed in the language, procedures, and technology of the industry.

We believe in the value of experience-based learning. Our goal is to engage students in a process of learning that links work and experience with classroom knowledge. The educational opportunities that employers afford our students speak volumes to their commitment to youth, education, and community.

How does it work?

We provide qualified students who have obtained 1,000 hours of shop experience, are licensed (if applicable) and who best fits your needs. Employers will interview our students and if it’s a good match, the student is hired as a paid employee of the company.

Seniors are eligible for co-op at the start of the school year. Juniors become eligible after the first half of the school year.
