Middle School Dance, Grades 6 and 7, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal School

This class is a one ­term course offered as part of the Fine Arts Rotation in Grades 6 and 7.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

To introduce students to the art of movement and dance

To identify elements that make dance a powerful means of communication

To recognize the universality of dance

To provide a means for imagination, self­-expression, and personal development and

confidence through dance

To identify the similarities and differences in attitudes toward dance in various cultures

To recognize the religious tradition, the social interaction and cultural fusion of dance in modern

and traditional societies

EXPECTATIONS AND GRADING

The students will be expected to do in­ class assignments involving memorizing movement

phrases, using their imagination to contribute dance phrases in cooperation with their peers.

Guest artists are brought into the classroom to teach specialized dance forms. Students are

expected to participate and commit to each form of dance or instruction.

Grades are based on participation, effort, focus and commitment to each assignment.

The dance class performs at the end of each term in 4 pieces of choreography in the Fine Arts

Showcase. This performance is considered to be their final exam.
