These guides were created by leaders, implementers and coaches to address common implementation challenges educators face in the adoption, application and full integration of UDL into their classroom, school/building, district/division/parish, or state.
Since the guides were developed by implementers for implementers, it was clear that there was a need for brief, easy to follow tools that integrated the latest innovations in UDL and Implementation Science. Furthermore, these tools need to be flexible enough to honor the hard work of the users of these guides and allow them to find the “just in time” supports they need.
Each guide was designed to help organizations identify areas of strengths and needs of their UDL implementation journey and develop a “realistic” pathway to make progress. Using practical tips, case examples, and action planning templates, each Driver Guide provides an implementation team with information they need in one place.
It is recommended that a leadership team/implementation team convene to engage in the review and use of the tools. Once teams have been identified, they are encouraged to choose from one of the following pathways.
DEFINE AND SEARCH FOR CURRENT STRENGTHS:
STEP 1: As a team write down how UDL is defined in your organization. Consider this example UDL Practice Profile of what this team definition could look like.
STEP 2: What's your "WHY"? In xx characters of less, come to consensus with your team
STEP 3: Review and complete the drivers and stages matrix located on the HOME page.
STEP 4: Using drivers and stages matrix, identify and document which stage of implementation the majority of the drivers fall in
STEP 5: Using drivers and stages matrix, identify and document which drivers are in the most mature stages
PLAN, DO, STUDY, ACT
Using the information and insights gained from using the drivers and stages matrix identify:
Pathway 1:
Identify and document which drivers are the STRONGEST, meaning most sustainable
Select the Performance Assessment Driver Guide and least 1 other Driver guide that corresponds to your findings
With your team, work through the guides
Identify and document themes, "gems" and evidence that the driver is in fact in place
Based on your findings develop a clearly defined implementation action plan that includes 1) how will you support/coach people, 2) what changes are needed to give people time and space to engage in the work and 3) how will you communicate findings to stakeholders along the way
Update your findings--retake the performance assessment driver guide and priority driver
Repeat, select the next driver guide to work through until all are completed
Pathway 2:
Identify and document which drivers are in the EARLIEST stage, or need the most attention
Select the Performance Assessment Driver Guide and least 1 other Driver guide that corresponds to your findings
With your team, work through the guides
Identify and document themes, "gems" and evidence that the driver is in fact in place
Using this approach, pay attention to "why" the driver is in such an early stage. Has it been thought about, but not yet initiated? Was there a change in the organization that key activities were in place, but is no longer in place or had been moved to an earlier stage? Are their barriers to moving forward? What are the barriers?
Based on your findings develop a clearly defined implementation action plan that includes 1) how will you support/coach people, 2) what changes are needed to give people time and space to engage in the work and 3) how will you communicate findings to stakeholders along the way
Update your findings--retake the performance assessment driver guide and priority driver
Repeat, select the next driver guide to work through until all are completed
