Overview

Theory of Knowlege is an assigned class where students have the opportunity to hone their reasoning and discussion skills. The course is designed to make students reflect on their understanding of knowledge and its role in their lives, local and global contexts. It makes connections between different subject areas and how knowledge is determined in the different disciplines. In grade 11, students will complete a TOK exhibition based on 3 objects of their choosing and how they underpin their understanding of knowledge. In grade 12, students complete a TOK essay which is in response to one of the prescribed titles published by the IB each year.

The extended essay is started in grade 11  and completed by the beginning of grade 12. This allows for students to have a period of time where their main focus is the extended essay and then similarly provide  more time to focus on other coursework in grade 12. The extended essay, should ideally be completed in a subject being taken at higher level. However students can get permission to complete their extended essays in ESS or a langauge B SL depending on their proposal. All students will submit proposals that require initial research before being approved for a subject and being allocated a faculty supervisor. Students will then work with their supervisor to refine their research question, create an outline before submitting a draft for feedback and completing the final essay.

CAS starts at the beginning of grade 11 and should be completed by March of grade 12. Alongside completing experiences, students are responsible for documenting them and completing reflections. These serve as evidence that can be shared with the IB as proof of completing the requirements. Additionally, reflections provide students with an opportunity to understand how their decisions and action impact others helping them become thinkers, caring and open-minded. Students are also required to complete a CAS project that serves their community. This allows students to really consider how they can impact and improve their community.
