Curriculum

Please read to your child often, even if your child is reading or beginning to read.  They need to hear you read, as well as hear you read as well as read to you.  The more we read the better reader we become.

Kindergarten

We will work with the same letters and sight words the children have worked with in their ELA class.  Please review the letter names/sounds and sight word as often as possible with your child.  We are working on blending 3 letter short vowel words and identifying the words.  We are also working on using our sight words to make sentences (drawing pictures to fill in words we do not know).

First Grade

We will continue to practice short vowel sounds (a, e, i, o, u) and cvc words (consonant, vowel, consonant) words.  We are using short vowel patterns to help us read other words with the same pattern (ten/men, hug/mug). We are working on identifying "l"  clusters in words (blends).  We are writing dictated sentences and correct them together to help us understand our mistakes.  We are beginning to work with long vowel sounds and the spellings we use for each long vowel.  We are working on the long a using the following spellings for writing this vowel, a, a_e, ai_ & _ay. The _ in each spelling is for a consonant.  (cake, train, day)

Second Grade

We will continue to review short and long vowel patterns using these patterns to help us read other words.  We are working with  blends( l. r, & s) and digraphs ( ch, sh, th, wh,& ph) identifying the blends and digraphs in words we are reading.  Digraphs are two consonants that come together and make a new sound.  We are writing sentences and correcting the sentences together to help us understand our mistakes.
