Incoming 1st Graders

Dear Future First Grade Families,

We are so excited to have you as a part of our first grade classes next year! We have many fun and interesting lessons prepared! While Summer is a time to relax, we hope that you can find some time to practice the skills your children have learned in Kindergarten so that they can put their best foot forward at the beginning of the year! Even 10 minutes a day can have such a positive effect on readiness for first grade. In addition to our Summer reading (Biscuit Goes to School by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel), here are some more suggestions for things to practice:

  • All incoming first graders will be required to complete and hand in the Math Summer Solutions Kindergarten level.

  • Addition and Subtraction facts: ABCYa.com has some great games to practice math facts for addition and subtraction problems to 10. You could also use flashcards from the dollar store to practice!

  • Letters and Letter Sounds: The dollar store also has great activity books that review the letters of the alphabet and their sounds. Included is also a copy of the Fundations keywords for the letters of the alphabet.

  • Sight Words: We have included a copy of First Grade Sight Words. All students will be screened on these words during the first week of school. If the list is too overwhelming, practice three words at a time until your child masters those words, then pick three more.

  • Writing: If you want to keep a journal over the summer, you could have your child write about what they have done so far during their summer break. Please encourage them to try their best at spelling, use a capital letter and a period, and leave space between words. Also, you could dictate simple short vowel words (ex: bat, clip, sock) and have your child practice spelling and writing the words in a Word Journal.

  • Self-help skills: Practice shoe tying, zippering, and buttoning! We highly suggest uniform shoes that slide one!

  • ·Reading: Please make sure your child is reading to you for at least 10 minutes three times a week!

Thank you in advance for your support and encouragement! We cannot wait to begin the school year!
