It is the vision of South San Francisco Unified that ALL students will graduate from high school as literate members of our community.
The district is committed to providing our students with rigorous instruction, authentic learning tasks, and necessary supports to achieve our vision. The district is committed to equitable access which includes high expectations, cognitive engagement, and daily grade-level content instruction
Our School Board's equity statement reminds us that: "Equity, in SSFUSD, is defined as giving students what they need, when they need it to fulfill their potential."
Strengthen Tier 1 and 2 instruction
Develop a universal structure for teaching and learning
Implement research-based practices for effective outcomes that are aligned to the Science of Reading
Minimum of 120 minutes for literacy and 30 minutes of Designated ELD in all K-5 classrooms
Teams of teachers created grade-level recommended models during the summer of 2022.
The recommended grade-level literacy blocks provide a framework for teaching in a structured, explicit, and systematic way. They are aligned to the Science of Reading and research-based best practices.
Essential skills, instructional routines, and high leverage activities are provided for each key literacy component. Resources are provided to support teachers’ implementation of the suggested routines and activities for effective instruction.
The recommended literacy block ensures that each key component of literacy is a focus of daily instruction, including recommendations on minutes.
The instructional routines and activities provided on the recommended models can be implemented with Wonders and also align to the district's ELA / ELD Scope and Sequence.
In order for effective literacy instruction to occur, a120 minute Structured Literacy Block is recommended. This includes daily instruction of all components of Structured Literacy as well as small group instruction.
In addition, a 30 minute Designated ELD block is recommended to support Multilingual Learners with their languae acquisition: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
By May 2026, we will accelerate literacy outcomes for all K-5 students as measured by their DIBELS Composite Score. We will increase the percentage of students at or above grade-level expectations from 64% to 74% district-wide from May 2025 to May 2026.
By May 2026, 100% of K-2 General Education teachers will implement daily UFLI lessons, follow the instructional routines from the program, and regularly use curriculum-based progress monitoring tools to effectively address students’ Word Recognition needs: Phonological Awareness, Decoding, and Sight Recognition.
By May 2026, 100% of K-5 teachers will integrate writing instruction throughout the instructional day by implementing evidence-based writing routines to enhance students’ literacy skills.
