The SCERTS® Model is a research-based educational approach and multidisciplinary framework that directly addresses the core challenges faced by children and persons with ASD and related disabilities, and their families. SCERTS® focuses on building competence in Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Support as the highest priorities that must be addressed in any program, and is applicable for individuals with a wide range of abilities and ages across home, school and community settings. The SCERTS Framework provides a robust, evidence based and multi-disciplinary approach to assessment and planning, relevant to individuals with a range of additional support needs, including autism. It includes a focus on Social Communication, Emotional Regulation and Transactional Supports at three developmental stages from pre-verbal to conversational level. SCERTS is lifespan model and could be applied across child and adult services.
The Social Skills Solutions Checklist is a progress monitoring tool containing 10 modules which include the following foundational areas: Joint attention, Self Awareness, Critical Thinking, and Perspective Taking. At the basis of the work produced by Ms. McKinnon and Ms. Krempa for this book is a necessary and well-researched understanding of social skills literature. The work follows neatly from the selection of behavioral principles and is an objective measurement which is a developmental approach to addressing social skills. It can be utilized to gain an understanding of an individual's baseline in their mastery of the different skills. The social Skills Solutions Checklist is intended to be a blueprint for professionals working directly with children with social deficits.
