EL: stands for English Learner.

Why is my child in the English Language Development program?

When you registered your child for school in the Scranton School District you completed a Home Language Survey. On that survey you indicated your child speaks a language other than English as his or her first language. Your child was then given a test to determine his or her level of proficiency of the English language. (Proficiency in a language is a measure of a person’s ability to understand and communicate in that language.) The test score determined that your child needs to participate in the English Language Development Program. Your child is in the ELD Program to become more proficient in English with a goal of becoming as proficient as his or her English speaking peers.
