TVET stands for Vocational Education and Training courses which are completed at TAFE in Stage 6 of schooling. Some of the courses available at TAFE are ATAR based and other courses are HSC only. The Careers Advisor looks after the students who are interested in TAFE or who are currently completing TAFE as part of Stage 6.
We have our own VET (Vocational Education and Training Course at school which is Construction). This is allocated under the TAS Faculty and you could contact Mr Salaun if you have any queries regarding Construction and Work Placement for this course only.
All TVET students please remember if you are unable to attend TAFE due to illness, excursion/incursion, exams etc email Mrs Buchanan so that she has a record and can advise TAFE why you are not in attendance.
If you have any problems at TAFE please see your Careers Advisor.
Q&A School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships
School based apprenticeships and traineeships allow senior high school students to commence an apprenticeship or complete a traineeship while at school. School based apprentices work part-time and undertake the first stage of their apprenticeship training before the end of the HSC year. School based trainees work part-time and complete their traineeship by the end of their HSC year.

Isabelle, why did you decide to complete a school based apprenticeship in Years 11 and 12?
At the end of Year 10 I wasn’t ready to leave school to go straight to work just in case it didn’t work out and I also wanted to achieve my HSC and graduate with my peer group so completing a SBAT in Years 11 and 12 was a way of easing into the work that I thought I wanted to do post school and still study for my HSC.
How did you find an employer?
Finding an employer for me was quite easy as I had completed work experience at a hairdressing salon and the owner had taken on students as SBATs in the past.
Has the experience been difficult at all?
In Year 11 it was particularly difficult catching up on 2 days missed schooling each week. I had to be organised so that I didn’t fall behind. It did mean sacrificing a lot of my free time in the evenings or on the weekends to make sure I was completing my school work.
Highlights?
I have loved the variety of each week, being at school and then working. I am happy with the work I have done to complete my HSC and the fact that I have also been able to start my career as I really enjoy hairdressing.
Have you got any advice for students who may be thinking of a school based apprenticeship or traineeship in Years 11 and 12?
It is definitely a harder option but also a safer option if you are still making decisions about your future career and the HSC.
You have to think about whether you have the right personality to balance school and work as you need to make sacrifices personally along the way and be organised.
You need initiative to stay on top of the work and correspond with the teachers when you need their help, advice etc.
Was it worth it?
For me doing a SBAT was worth it. Although it was at times challenging, it enabled me to start my apprenticeship, learn new things, and complete my HSC and final years of school alongside my friends.
